@nicolethegrrr8: We did that and it turned out beautifully! I just told my girls to get any floor length dress in wine from David's bridal. I'll try to post a picture a bit later.
I did it because of the same reason you're thinking about. Here are the model pics (because they're all still getting their dresses) and this is what it looks like.
Two on the left, (one is a jR bridesmaids carrying our rings and the other is my MOH) but the other ones in green are bridesmaids. Hope it helps! but, I love the idea!
Here are my girls - I just told them to pick a brown dress - I didn't care about the length or material. I love how our photos turned out!

i'm not having bms, or i would definitely just choose a color family and tell them to pick whatever they want.
My girls had the Victoria's Secret Convertible dress and tied it however they were comfortable. it was great, because they live all over the place, but could all order on VS website in the color chosen!
I love this wedding. The bride is a paper/invitation designer and shop owner, in New orleans.
BMs picked their own green dress, provided a paint chip for the bride, and the bride picked coordinated GMs ties from the chips.

Did anyone have their bridesmaids choose different style dresses? If so, how did it turn out? Did they all look like they went together (in pictures and in person)?
Because my bridesmaids live in different areas and are all different sizes, I'm thinking of letting them each choose their own black dress, but I'm thinking of stipulating that the material should be a satin or stretch satin.
