I am self-employed and when I take time off for anything, I still have to pay my overhead expenses. Thus maternity leave will be an extremely expensive proposition. Does anyone know of disability insurance policies that include pregnancy and routine maternity leave, or anything to help us afford kids when the time comes?

From what I understand, short term disability insurance would cover maternity leave.

@guitargirl: I am a teacher and I know that my disability insurance covers pregnancy. I think it is through American Fidelity?

Short-term disability will usually cover you for 6 weeks if you have a vaginal delivery, and a little longer if you have a c-section. Many short-term disability plans only pay out a fraction of your normal pay though. Are you trying to purchase your own private disability insurance? If you’re already pregnant, then pregnancy might count as a pre-existing condition, and they could turn you down. If you’re not pregnant yet, you should apply ASAP before you get pregnant.
