did any of you use disability insurance as part of your maternity leave?
I can get it through work from Colonial Life. The materials say pregnancy is covered, so long as you don’t have a normal birth in the first 9 months. But they don’t say how the coverage works or what it entails, so any shared experiences would help. – thanks

I’ve been looking into types of maternity insurance rather than disability insurance because it seems cheaper in the plans I’ve looked at. But I’m a fledgling at this whole thing, so I can’t offer any advice.

Thanks for the reminder. I totally intend to do this through my work. I don’t think we have to pay though…just enroll. Either way it’s worth it. It counts for time off before labor if needed too.

Are you meaning a form of short term disability? This would cover a percentage of your pay while on leave. This is completely seperate from any medical insurance regarding the pregnancy.
Anyways, if so it is a good thing to have. Especially if offered through your employer as it is much cheaper. It basicially will cover your loss of pay (mine is 60% of my base/weekly) while on leave. I beleive we get up to 26 weeks a year. There are 7 day and 14 day wait meaning it does not start paying until after one of those waiting periods. I have it just for peace of mind. I am a nurse and work the floor and if I got in a car accident and broke my leg or something major, I would not be able to work so this would help with the loss of income. I think it is totally worth it and have seen people use it for their pregnancy leave and I intend to as well. But yes most plans are voided if you are already pregnant at time of enrollment or you must not give birth in the first 9 mths.

@MissGreen: exactly. thank you for your insight. i can get it through work, but they don’t pay for it and it seems i have to apply with the company directly. i’m wondering if i have to exhaust all my sick & vacation time (a good amount) before i would be able to use it. i need to talk to hr of course, but wanted to gauge others’ experiences.
@soonerpsych: haven’t really heard much about maternity insurance. i’ll have to look into it. it definitely isn’t offered through my employer, though.
The rates I’m being offered are:
$15.75 for $500
$31.50 for $1,000
$47.25 for $1,500
$63 for $2,000
This is monthly (3 months) with a week elimination period for both accidents & sicknesses. I can pay more to get up to $3k, 0 elimination period for accidents, or to get a longer benefit (6, 12 mth). I can also pay less for 2 week elimination periods.
