Im not getting Married until 2015 and plan on losing at LEAST 50-80lbs by next year for when I go legit gown shopping. I was even thinking of leaving my City of Winnipeg, Mb Canada, to go to the states and even Kleinfeld because my city does not carry a lot of the designers I like. HOWEVER, my mom convinced me that I should take the time to look in my own city just in case to save money and time, which I agree.
I decided that we should go see what Davids Bridal had, since I had heard so much about it. I was there once with my BMs to play dress in BM dresses which went okay but this time, for Bridal Gowns I was completely turned off. NOT ONLY did this chick NOT know how to serve me, as a plus size 18/20, I told her what I looked for in a dress and all she showed me was 10 PLUS size dresses from the catalogue which I hated all of them. Im a picky person, I know what I like. I will NOT settle for a dress because of my size. I know that I can get any dress ordered in my size as well.
Anyway, after telling her what I like, which is couture, structure, different, bling, lace, tulle…. she still didnt seem to find any dresses in the store that would fit me. Me and my mother went looking and I found 3 dresses in my size that I could try simply for shape comparison and to ”get an idea”. I tried on maybe 7 dresses and after being embarrassed over and over, Vera Wang saved the appointment. I told her that I liked Vera Wang style and not only did she NOT look to see if they had a Vera Wang in an 18 or 20 or even 16, she told me that she knew they didnt get sizes larger than a 14.
After standing in my room watching all the SKINNY brides try on every single dress in the store, my mom came in with a Vera Wang in an 18 that I had liked previously. Consultant? No where to be found because they were over booked and she had 3 other brides to deal with.
Anyway, the Vera Wang was nice and I wasnt embarrassed to come out in it. It was still a little plain even with the neat skirt but it was the only dress worth taking a picture of.
So for any Plus size brides who were interested in this particular Vera Wang, this is what it looks like on a size 18/20. If I were to get this dress, it would be altered into a sweet heart neckline forsure with a better bling belt at the very least.
on the model.

Sorry you had a crappy experience. I must say, the VW looks amazing on you! I think it looks better on you than it does the model.

@MissBling: Sorry you had a bad experience, DB treated me pretty terribly as well. That dress looks lovely on you, though! You have fabulous curves!

@MissBling: This dress deserves a curvy bride. I think you look amazing in that gown. And, BTW, you don’t LOOK like an 18/20. And that’s coming from a plus-size bride…

I am sorry that you had such a bad experience. We went shopping there a few months ago. Our consultant left for a lunch break and didn’t tell anyone that she was working with us. So we made fun of it and were running around the store in BM dresses that didn’t zip and did not fit well.
But that dress looks Ahh – mazing on you!! I think you should definately stay with that style. And now when you are really ready to go dress shopping you know exactly what you are looking for as far as shape, etc

at least it looks great on you! Just remember that at the end of the day, it’s the dress that matters, not where you get it.

Fortunately there are plenty of DB stores and (from what I’ve read) most are better than that.
So go to one go those stores and BUY THAT VERA WANG DRESS BECAUSE iT LOOKS FREAKING AMAZEBALLS ON YOU.

I seen another bee who wore this dress, and it was stunning on her! [she was plus size]. I had overlooked this dress thinking it would look awful on a larger frame, but it is quite flattering!
As for DB, i’ve already checked them out, most of their sample sizes were a 10 [street size 7/8], there was no way I get getting my size 18 butt into them! They also didn’t have many of the dresses I wanted to try, period [like the tulle petal skirt].

@MissBling: I hated my DB experience as well…
First part because, despite me DEMANDING to the manager that my information NOT be shared with any third parties whatsoever, and the manager assuring me up and down that they won’t do that, they’ll only use my info to schedule appointments for alterations etc…. three days after my visit I was bombarded with emails, phone calls, and letters in the mail. WHAT.
Second part because… well the first time I went they put me in a long-line bra thing, didnt have my size so I was squeezed into a bra two cupsizes too small… but the consultant was nice and respectful but didn’t really seem to get the idea of what I was looking for in a dress… BUT the second time I went, a different consultant helped me and she gave me the same ill-fitting long-line bra, AND an A-line slip. I tried the slip with a few dresses but felt like it made me look wider (I was looking at flowy chiffon dresses at the time and did not want any poufiness!), so I told her I wanted to try another dress without it…… and she refused to help me into the dress because I would not have the slip on. I was mortified and so so so embarassed.. What, I’m too fat to see in my underwear…? She made me feel like I was an idiot for even asking such a thing because I’m too large to be seen without a slip covering me up. Bah.
Now… my recommendation to you… go to other salons and try on other dresses.. you’ll be amazed. I did have a bad experience at another salon (but NOT anything due to my weight!! It was because they would not allow pictures and they would not tell me the designer/style of the dress I liked, and they were RUDE and snooty about it when I asked). But I found an absolutely AMAZING salon with a wonderful woman who really made me feel like a BRIDE.
PLUS, I can’t recommend Maggie Sottero dresse enough for us larger ladies!! I don’t need a bra or corset AT ALL (and I’m 36 DDD!) because her dreses are built so perfectly! After trying on some of her dresses, and seeing how much better they fit, how much more flattering, and how much lighter they were, I’d never go back to David’s even if I didn’t already hate the company. And you can often find her dresses used or as sample sales for not much more than David’s dresses. 🙂
P.S. I think you look beautiful in that VW dress… you should check out Maggie Sottero’s Juliette! The black sash is detachable, so you could add whatever sash you like. 🙂

I am sorry you had a bad experience 🙁 I am a plus-size bride too and purchased my dress from David’s Bridal, but luckily I had/am still having a positive experience. Currently I am in the alterations stage and I don’t have any complaints so far.
I am a size 18 and I went to my appointment knowing that I may not be able to try on every dress I wanted to because of the sample size issue. I found myself really attracted to the Galina line and my consultant told me that they rarely send samples above a 14. I understood of course; I expected there to be some issues but I am very confident with myself and I was okay with that. Somehow I managed to actually get into the 14s and was able to see what the dresses would look like. It seems like your consultant talked down to you though, which is NOT professional and is so, SO annoying. I also can’t believe she ignored you near the end — no one deserves that!
As far as the Vera is concerned, I LOOOOOVE that dress on you! That style is so flattering and you definitely rock it!

You look so tiny! I love this dress–definitely one of my favorites, and I really wish it’d been designed with a sweetheart neckline. Straight across is just not flattering on anyone.
I’m sorry you had such a crappy experience. It seems like DB just wants to make money and not actually help anyone. :

@lovelove1028: I LOVE Maggie Sottero and I had planned a wedding once before and originally had a Maggie Dress picked out AS WELL as in 2010, my grad gown was a Maggie Sottero. Im a 38H cup and I didnt need a bra or anything with my dress. I love her stuff… There are 3 Salons in my city that have proper Authorization to carry her stuff, so I will be going back to the one I got my grad dress from as well as the others.
I thought Davids Bridal was supposed to be very well known for good service but I do understand that sometimes there is a bad apple that can ruin the bunch, so unfortunatly, I will never go back there or reccomend it.
Anyway, thank you ladies, all your responses were excatly what I needed to read 🙂

Just for fun, this is my Maggie Sottero Grad Dress 😀 size 18, NO bra, just corset!

I’m plus size (size 14-16) and my dress is maggie sottero, she has excellent dresses for plus size and usually the bridal stores that sell maggie sottero are more upscale and the employees are more professional. I dislike davids bridal to me they’re cheap and knock offs of real designer dresses. Go to a different store and try on different designer dresses they might not have your size on the sample but you’ll be able to order it whatever size you need and atleast be able to try it on or hold it up against you. When I got my dress the sample sizes were a size 6 and when they tied the corset the back was all open but atleast I was able to try them on to see how they look.

@MissBling: That dress looks GORGEOUS on you! Love the belt!
