Im not getting Married until 2015 and plan on losing at LEAST 50-80lbs by next year for when I go legit gown shopping. I was even thinking of leaving my City of Winnipeg, Mb Canada, to go to the states and even Kleinfeld because my city does not carry a lot of the designers I like. HOWEVER, my mom convinced me that I should take the time to look in my own city just in case to save money and time, which I agree.
I decided that we should go see what Davids Bridal had, since I had heard so much about it. I was there once with my BMs to play dress in BM dresses which went okay but this time, for Bridal Gowns I was completely turned off. NOT ONLY did this chick NOT know how to serve me, as a plus size 18/20, I told her what I looked for in a dress and all she showed me was 10 PLUS size dresses from the catalogue which I hated all of them. Im a picky person, I know what I like. I will NOT settle for a dress because of my size. I know that I can get any dress ordered in my size as well.
Anyway, after telling her what I like, which is couture, structure, different, bling, lace, tulle…. she still didnt seem to find any dresses in the store that would fit me. Me and my mother went looking and I found 3 dresses in my size that I could try simply for shape comparison and to ”get an idea”. I tried on maybe 7 dresses and after being embarrassed over and over, Vera Wang saved the appointment. I told her that I liked Vera Wang style and not only did she NOT look to see if they had a Vera Wang in an 18 or 20 or even 16, she told me that she knew they didnt get sizes larger than a 14.
After standing in my room watching all the SKINNY brides try on every single dress in the store, my mom came in with a Vera Wang in an 18 that I had liked previously. Consultant? No where to be found because they were over booked and she had 3 other brides to deal with.
Anyway, the Vera Wang was nice and I wasnt embarrassed to come out in it. It was still a little plain even with the neat skirt but it was the only dress worth taking a picture of.
So for any Plus size brides who were interested in this particular Vera Wang, this is what it looks like on a size 18/20. If I were to get this dress, it would be altered into a sweet heart neckline forsure with a better bling belt at the very least.

Very Pretty dress and it looks good on you. I also had a bad experience at Davids Bridal. I could not find anything. The consultant was okay, she was working with another bride and took all her attention away from and focused on the other bride. I ended having my BM pull dresses and helping me try them on. I ended up leaving that day and I purchased my dress from Low’s in Brinkley AR. That was a much better experience. I have known a lot of brides who bought their dresses from Davids Bridal and had a wonderful experience. I just guess it matters who your consultant is at the time of your appointment.

I think the key to DB is not going on the weekend or evening. I went on a Wednesday at 11am and the salesperson spent 3 1/2 hours with me because there were only 2 other brides in the store but they had like 5-6 salespeople on staff. If you can, take a morning off and try again.
But… whatever you decide, that dress looks beautiful!

No matter the size, I always hear bad things about David’s Bridal. I came in with low expectations of the service, knew what I wanted and got out of there. The sales people generally seem overwhelmed and indifferent. Of course, that isn’t the case for all of them.
The dress looks lovely on you.

I went to WPG’s DB as well. There is something lack luster about the dresses honestly. I was really dissapointed in the quality. Plus, being in WPG the prices aren’t all that great compared to other designer dresses.

I am on my phone so cant go into all the details but I HATED my experience at Davids Bridal….AND my appointment was on a TUESDAY afternoon. I left humiliated and angry and dont even get me started on whatever harrassing junkmail/phonecall list it took forever to get off of.
That dress does look great on you though, sorry you also had a bad experience.

I am sorry your experience was no good at David’s– I didn’t have much fun there myself– but that dress looks GORGEOUS on you!

I agree for the most part about David’s being a huge pain in the ass, but not all of the dresses are available in women’s sizes. If they are available they are usually special order only and they don’t carry them in the store. it’s unfortunate.

Thats a beautiful dress! I’m personally not crazy about db. I went to Alfred Angelo and had phenomenal service there. Found the perferct dress, I’m your same size. Not sure if they have stores in Canada but if they do definitely check them out!

I only went to DB to buy my garter. They treated me like crap, so I was happy I already had a dress and hadn’t even bothered going to them looking for one.

I agree with most brides and thier expereinece at DB… I did go in there to see Bridal Gowns, and they were soooo pushy and demanding…and they overbooked, so I had to share a changeroom with a stranger (didn’t bother me, she was super sweet) but there was no organization whatsoever…. I found my dream dress in another store nonetheless. I did return later for the bridemaids dress and the sales lady was very very nice and even chose a maternity dress for one of my BM that was not evne there and arragned a time for her to come in and try it on. But all in all, I would avoid DB in the future….Jus saying

I did a lot of dress shopping in Winnipeg and overall had my worst experiences at David’s Bridal as well. The service was terrible and they seemed to care more about getting me on their mailing list than finding me a dress. Also, their dresses were cheap. The material on most of them felt very plastic-y and they didn’t seem to fit very nicely. I also didn’t like that you bought off the rack. Good for someone in a time crunch but if you’ve got the time, I’d suggest ordering in a new “fresh” dress.
I will say however, there are lots of alternate great bridal stores in Winnipeg with decent plus size selections. Its true, depending on the time of day or even if the consultant is in a good mood will change the experience of your dress shopping but if you want a couple suggestions, PM me, and I can give you the names of some places I went to.

I’m so afraid this will happen to me (I’m currently your size). Eek! So sorry you had to deal with that.
My friend is a consultant there so I’m hoping that will make things less stressful. I don’t really like most of the styles there, but here’s hoping.

I think it truly depends on the DB that you go to and when you go. I went to the one closest to my house on a weekend and the service was HORRIBLE. Pressure to buy a dress. When I stated I needed my mom to see it, the first reponse was “can you text her to come?” THEN when I said that she lived in another state, they said, “Can you Facetime or Skype with her?” Needless to say, didn’t buy the dress there. However, found the dress I wanted.
So, I went to the DB by my mom’s house and it was the complete opposite. Nothing but the best customer service I could ask for, took time to show me the bustles they could do, no pressure at all, even to buy a veil. The consultant actually told me to wait to buy one if I didn’t know how I was wearing my hair.
Since then, I’ve gone to another DB nearby (as I think the bridesmaids dresses I want are there) and they were very nice and I felt no pressure.
Sorry you had such a bad experience. Your dress looks amazing!
