disappointing makeup trial

Hi Hive.  I had my makeup trial this weekend, and let's just say I was less than thrilled.  There was such a huge difference between what I asked for and what was done, that I don't think this is a person that I would like to continue to work with.  I'm looking into finding an alternative makeup artist, but I'm also considering doing my makeup myself.  Anyone out there going this route? Any brides out there that have done their own makeup the day of?  Any advice?

I am! My makeup trial looked like what I do myself when we go out, so I had a hard time justifying the hassle and expense of a make-up artist. I went to the Laura Mercier counter, told them what I liked and didn't like about the trial, and bought a bunch of products that I didn't have but apparently needed (mostly foundation and primers). I'm practicing on the weekends too, since I don't wear this much makeup that often.

a lot of salons also do makeup instruction, which might help you as well.  You do definitely need a lot more than just your regular makeup, to make it last and also for the pictures.

How practiced are you with makeup? If you have some experience, I highly recommend checking out Kevyn Aucoin's Face Forward book. It has a ton of beautiful looks that would be appropriate for weddings, and is very helpful and easy to boot. And it sounds crazy but there are some great makeup tutorials on YouTube!

Good luck..

I always go to MAC for big events. I have only been let down once. I will most certainly try them out before my big day. Bonus: they don't heavy-handedly pressure you to buy, buy, buy... but I always do buy!

I will most likely go with MAC.  During their events, they instruct how to apply every aspect of their makeup application.  AND, if you like the person, most likely they do it on the side.  They aren't supposed to talk about their freelance work, but I have noticed many will if you inquire quietly.  I am not much of a makeup person (mascara and maybe powder for those rough mornings), and I loved what they did!  Seriously...I bought $100 after and was definitely not pushed to do so.  They really were great to work with!
