Depends on how much you want to spend.  Disney has three level of resorts: Value–like a Best Western, Holiday Inn; Moderate–more highly themed and resort like; Deluxe–highly themed, luxurious resorts.  We stayed at a value once and didn’t care too much for it.  We have stayed at Carribean Beach, Coronado Springs, and Port Orleans Riverside which are all moderates and we liked them all.  As for deluxe we have stayed at Old Key West and Animal Kingdom Lodge–also very nice.  For the price I like the moderates, but Disney is offering some good deals these days.  You might check out http://www.disboards.com for more info!

Also–if you stay on property you don’t need a rental car because they have internal buses and ferries to take you around.

It is 100% worth the extra money to stay at the park, in my opinion. You don’t have to rent a car, because the Disney Express picks you up and drops you off at the airport, and there are free busses to the parks and Downtown Disney from your resort.  My family stayed off-site once for a few days at the start of our vacation, and it was awful. It was a nice hotel (a Courtyard Marriott, if I remember correctly), but having to follow a shuttle schedule really ruined things. We would just get settled at the pool and my dad would be like “ok, the last shuttle into Epcot before dinner is in 15 minutes!”.  I know a lot of people save money by staying off, but I don’t think it’s worth the time or inconvenience.

If money isn’t really an issue, the Boardwalk is my favorite hotel. Nightlife nearby, and you can walk to Epcot (and to Hollywood Studios, but it’s a longer hike). For moderate hotels, I like Port Orleans French Quarter.  I’ve never stayed at any of the value resorts, but I’ve heard that they aren’t great for honeymooners because they tend to be noisy with a lot of kids and families.

We’re staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our honeymoon!  I’ll let you know how it goes!  I would definitely recommend picking up the book The PassPorter’s Guide to DisneyWorld.  I have been reading through that and it has a lot of really super useful information in it that I didn’t think about when we started planning!
