Sorry if this is a repeat story, but I feel like I'm bursting at the seams with excitement, nervousness, I dunno what! Earlier this week, my BF informs me that a friend of his got engaged over the weekend. And I was just like, "Oh, that's nice." So he says, "Speaking of which, I still need to know your size :)" I informed him that I have had no time since we last discussed rings to actually go somewhere to get sized and try on stuff.

I had planned to go after work today, but didn't think I'd have time. I had been doing research online and found a jewelry store not far from my office, so I figured I'd sneak over there during my lunch break to see what their inventory was like. I was so nervous! It was the strangest feeling ever. I guess because this makes it real, huh? So I tried on a bunch of different styles, although I feel like I'm not much closer to finding anything I'm totally in love with than before I came in. I of course still plan to do more in-person research, but the exciting part is that the woman took down my info and and my BF's email address, and will be forwarding him photos of the two settings I liked best and my ring size!

I've been distracted the entire rest of this afternoon! I can't even descibe how it feels. It's sort of scary even to have spoken the words "I want to see some engagement rings" to another human being!

Now the challenge is to keep my lips zipped and remain calm and patient until I get the ring! Wheeeeee!

Did anyone else have a similar experience when they first started researching engagement rings?

Aww!! It was so exciting looking at them and him saying... yeah, I like that one too... and finally agreeing on one! It's such a happy thing!

And girl... when you get engaged, it just gets so surreal! Good luck and I can't wait to hear about it!

    Hey girl!

Well I am SO excited for you! When we were ring shopping I did it with him there so he could see what I wanted, I feel like pictures dont do justice.

Anyway, it was weird at first and I didnt tell anyone because then they would say oh you guys are going to get married? When? Where?

Instead of being bombarded with questions that I dont know answers to i kept my mouth shut and just enjoyed my little secret.

yes! when i visited the boy for christmas he told me that we would be going ring shopping during my visit and he made it a whole special thing. lol. but it was at first, overwhelming and then so much fun. when i was admiring the rings it clicked that one day soon i'd be sporting one that i wouldn't have to return. and then i put my hand in his and really loved what i saw. swoon.

When BF and I went shopping back in August or so, I pitched a fit because I didn't want to go on the day we went because we had been arguing and it just didn't seem right. Well once we walked in, of course someone says, "Hello how can I help you? Or are you looking for something in particular?" And BF just chimes in as I go to say the standard "no thanks we're just looking." He pipes up with "We want to look at engagement rings!"

I stopped dead in my tracks! It was so surreal to hear it said out loud! I was very giggly the rest of the day and even when we were in the shop.

    oOO thats' so exciting!

It was funny, the way my bf figured out ring size is that he one day did a fake/funny proposal on me and gave me ring made out of those arts/crafts pipe cleaners. He put it on me and adjusted it and said I had to wear it because he can't afford a real ring. I laughed and took it off evenutally...and he took that to the jeweler!

    lol

too bad it was not a good method...I had to get my ring sized down .75 of a size when I got it!

I am so distracted too. I am in grad school and finals are creeping up, but all that I can think about is his proposal. I know that it is coming soon and I can't help but think about it all day and all night. It is such a good feeling, but I am afraid that I won't finish my paper. lol

thanks honeybear!! i really have no clue! it will be a big surprise i'm sure - he's REALLY good at keeping secrets! it will depend mostly on what he decides he wants to spend (i'm telling not to go over $2K - but he can decide if he wants to spend more), and how long it takes him to save for it. if he has the money and he's ready to take the plunge, then possibly by the end of the year. but realistically i think Feb. i doubt once he has the ring, he'll be able to keep it very long.

trugem - i am at work still and i can't focus!! eeek! it's so bad! once i finally narrow down what i really like, ship him off an email with that info - the real waiting starts!!

@jaxx317: plus, his mama let it slip that he wants to propose by christmas and I think that he already brought the ring. So I am excited and I want to go buy every wedding book in the store, but I don't want to do it until I actually have the ring. Lord help me!

Thanks Curly! I was a little hesitant to pass on his info, but I figured it would be a bit more subtle than just outright telling him :)

So these are the two that I picked out. I really like them (both very different) but not 100% in love with them. This place had a pretty limited selection.... plus not too many rings that didn't have a round diamond. I'm really digging oval and marquis cuts but i kinda want to see how they look on me first and how they work in various settings....If the rain doesn't flood my weekend, I'm going to try to go to another place or two to see more styles! Wheee!

i like the band on the second ring better too but it costs a pretty penny :(  i literally never wear rings on my left ring finger (i've always thought it was bad luck), so was totally cluless about size. i was actually shocked to find out it was half a size smaller than i thought! who knew?

the search continues....i've fancied a couple of estate rings but those a tricky and cost extra to get them resized... (like who really wears a 4.5??). seriosuly i could look at these things all day and night, and still not be able to pick out less than 10 or 20 that i like!! i think actually seeing stuff in person has greatly helped narrow down what i like setting-wise.

i could do that cre... but i'm just afraid my BF is so clueless that i'd literally have to set everything up for him and just say "go to this place and give them your credit card". that's not fun. plus i really want it to be a surprise what i get in the end, so i'd rather go to a couple of different places find one or two (or maybe 5!) styles that i like, find out who has the best prices, and let him do the rest of the work! it's like getting a christmas present that you asked for. up until the day, there's suspense as to whether you get it or not, but when you see the boxes on christmas morning and you figure out what the gift is before even opening it, there's always a tiny element of disappointment.

i'm planning to send him some links from estate jewelry websites so he has a sense of what i'm into. if he chooses to go that route and buy soemthing and get it resized, so be it! either way, it will be a win-win :)
