I haven’t personally, but my sister did one for her wedding. They had a sunset ceremony, then apps, champagne & dessert after. All were self catered except the cake.

She did cheese platters, dips like spinach & artichoke w/ fancy crackers, etc. She bought a lot of the fancier dips from Heinen’s (a high end grocer, if you have one in your area, I would think you could find similar things at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s).

She also bought pretty bowls and platters from thrift stores, Good Will & the Salvation Army. Everything was elegantly displayed.

She “hired” a few of my mom’s friends to “serve”. Everything was set out ahead of time (no “hot apps”), all the “servers” had to do was circulate with champagne glasses, clear dishes, and serve the cake.

The only thing I would suggest is having people other than your mom help shop & set up on the day of. My mom was totally stressed, and didn’t have enough time to get ready, so she hates all the pictures.

I would also have someone in charge of “guiding the crowd”, no one knew what to do at my sister’s or was paying attention during some of the symbolic things like the cake cutting.

Good luck, hope that helped!

I thought from the title that you were going to put out raw appetizer ingredients and let guests make their own food, and I was all ready gently discourage you. ha!

Anyway, I haven’t done DIY apps myself, but I think it sounds great — the only question is, who would prepare and lay out the food? If you’ve got someone who can do that (maybe pay a high school/college kid?), I’d say go for it.

Was your sister’s wedding after dinner? What time?

What did she put on the invitation regarding food?

My reception is all apps but by a caterer. I couldn’t afford a meal. Our wedding is at 2 pm. After lunch and before dinner. We are having an open bar beer and wine.

If you have the people to help you out, go for it.
