    Hello Hive!

I've finally finished our wedding cake! Now that she's done I need your opinions.

In the name of saving money I bought a cake form from Taylor Form (they are amazing and shipping is lightning fast) and applied joint compound in three layers...because I just LOVED sanding it over and over again (ha ha). Of course, ribbon and flowers completed the project.

This way we can apply our money to another part of the wedding and just serve sheet cakes. Hello savings!

So ladies, is this cake wedding worthy?

We're still tossing ideas around about what to cut. I'm fine with a piece of cake hidden in the back but FI wants to go a less obvious route.

@Nurseheather30- They are silk! I ordered them off of Ebay. They were a steal..24 heads for like $7.00.

Is it covered in fondant or anything?  It looks really good!  You could always do the very bottom tier as a real cake so you have something real to cut into.

amazing!!! i say most people wouldn't really notice the cake-cutting so you could very well have a big real piece ready for you both to feed each other with ;)

@Lillindy- No fondant, it's all joint compound which is kind of a plaster like "frosting" for walls. It dries white so it's perfect.

The other issue is outdoor wedding + any sort of sugary icing + insects = horrified guests looking on as what they think is their after dinner delight is feasted on by bugs.

You really did do a nice job. Congrats!

I've always thought the cake cutting is just a little silly (although, frankly, I'll probably still do it). It is perfectly reasonable to skip it all together.

Another idea is to display, if possible, in a location that is less central to the dining area. You could then buy just a matching top and cut that in front of everyone. You still get the feeding eachother cake photos, and a small white fondant cake won't run you mutch. May be able to get it thrown in with the sheet cakes, if you bargain.

    Hi

I found a website where you can rent a wedding cake that is already designed or you can design your own. The cake is foam but covered in fondant and has gumpaste bows/flowers on it. The secret for the cake cutting is that the cake is made where 1 slice of real cake is made in it and you can slice that piece then have the cake taken to the back and the hidden sheet cake is served. The website for this awesome idea is cakerental.com check it out

@Monitajb - I agree. Cake cutting isn't high on my list of wedding priorities.

To tell you the truth I don't even watch the cake cutting! But for those cake cutting loving guests we'll cut out a slice of the fake cake and stuff a piece of cake in it. That works, right? Lol

You could do one big tier of cake with the same ribbon and flowers on a cake stand and cut into that.  The multi cake thing is a hit right now.  I'm doing 3 cakes two will be 3 layers and the center 1 will be 2 layers.  All displayed on cake stands

I didn't know I was still getting "buzz" around the cake but I ended up scraping this cake and starting over. I thought it was too plain and our wedding kind of evolved.

After some tough breaks (It's a looong story) we're not planning to get married until 2011 in our backyard and now that FH is participating in all this wedding planning we're not even get to use a fake cake! He loves the cake/pie buffet and I'm so up for that!
