Hi-
I am currently networking with someone who does this as a profession, and she does great work! You could even send her that link and I'm sure she could do this for you. If you're interested her name is Jennifer and you can check out her work at www.calligraphybyjennifer.net
Please let her know that Mary from "Simply Unique Weddings & Events" referred you to her.
Hope this helps! Good Luck & Happy Planning!
Her stuff is very pretty. :) I'm looking to learn to do it myself because I'm an artist & graphic designer, and I think it'd be fun to learn how to do it. Weird, I know. I'm bad at relinquishing control.
LOL! I can understand what you mean! I am the same way about control. Oh I didn't realize you wanted to do it yourself, sorry about that, but at least you were able to get some sort of idea from her website =)
you tube has lessons as well. i am playing around with it now!
What sort of pen are you practicing with? Ink-dippy one, marker, etc?
a sh.tty one, just a sharpy with a conical point. i suck at this though, it's going to take a lot of practice but could be really fun!! it's actually quite relaxing.
LOL
I bought a calligraphy marker to play with, but I should have paid more attention because the nib is so thick that everything ends up looking very gothic.
so since i am anal and obsessive compulsive i searched the board here are a few links that i've found
http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/01/25/calligraphy-supplies/
http://www.weddingbee.com/2008/09/09/shorties-guide-to-diy-calligraphy/
the vaxxine site that i just posted seems really interesting it is teaching the proper strokes
i'm trying them as well! as i said i'm obsessive compulsive (at least it gets engagement off my brain!!).... i am thinking if i practice that i could be really good by november-december... i have a bride that couldn't afford calligraphy and it may be a service that i am able to offer her....
Look what I found (courtesy of calligraphy by Jennifer on Facebook). Wouldn't this be phenomenal for the invitations?! eta it's a stamp made from a calligraphy template.
@fiftyfootbride: okay so all we'd have to do is do ONE magnificently written template then digitize it, i'm supposing by scanning it and making it a pdf, then converting it to a stamp and voila!! if not, you could always make a digital version of it and turn it into a stamp.....
Or I could just hand carve it, but then I might as well make a plate and print it on the big ol' rolly press. :)
very true!! you're way more hands on than me, i love idea of a stamp. i think i'm going to go the stamping route.
Probably a good choice. It's not very safe to have big vats of acid at home for the zinc plates. :)
Tomorrow I am going to go to le art store and buy a dip calligraphy pen and an inkwell. I'll make a huge mess, I'm sure, but it'll be fun. :)
Ooh, I might also try using a brush with the ink or some gouache. I just had that lightbulb idea! We'll see how that works!
cool!! i think i'll head to the store this weekend or early next week.... i want the dip and inkwell as well.
btw I LOVE your ring!!! I went to the Tiffany's website, it's so cool and fun!
Thanks! You're so sweet. :)
The dip and inkwell just seem so much fancier and authentic. Probably give the best results too. :) (Just might be a little messy at first)
@fiftyfootbride: but if i use the dip and inkwell i'll feel so lady like and proper lol!!! see i have this thing with june cleaver and jane austen (<3) them. everyone who knows me finds it hilarious because i can be vicious in the business world, but at heart i am truly a lady's lady. now hmmmm if i could only keep the house clean and stay off the bee boards lol!!
Not to butt in, but you won't find a book on a whimsical script, but they are all based on either Spencerian or Copperplate and then made into your personal style. Look under 'penmanship' for a book and you will find one :o) You will also need an oblique pen holder, most art stores carry dip pens, but not oblique pens. They hold the nib at the correct angle, to achieve what you are trying to do. You can also find great references on IAMPETH website.
Ohhh cool an expert!! lol!!!! I really like the copperplate style it is so pretty and fun.
@ sallyinvitedink- THANK YOU. I went to the bookstore today, and everything was not at all what I was looking for- the more traditional/gothic things. I really appreciate your tip/comment. :)
I too searched for books thinking that calligraphy was what I was looking for and it wasn't what I thought either. My mom & I took a class with Bill Kemp, a master penman in Spencerian. I was more interested in that particular font, my mom on the other hand was interested in a more whimsical font like you posted. From that class, she learned enough basics to create her own whimsical font t. The IAMPETH website is a great tool to learn the basics and has a ton of lessons posted. The oblique pens are available through Michael Sull on www.zanerian.com
Thank you!
The IAMPETH website has so many awesome resources. I haven't had a chance to go through all of it yet, but I can't wait to play with the lessons. :)

Does anyone have any recommendations as far as DIY calligraphy books or resources go? The amazon search was sort of a failure. I'm not looking to do traditional traditional calligraphy, but something more along this style...
