Fiance and I have decided to DIY our own centerpieces for the reception based on this idea from Martha Stewart Weddings:
We’d like to make them mini, though, so people can see over them. Maybe a foot or less. We live in a city so we don’t have good access to sticks/branches. Does anyone know where we can buy little branches? Or have an idea for something else we could use besides branches to get the same effect? Thanks in advance!

I think you may lose the effect if you make them too short.
Tall centerpieces are not a problem if the bottom 12-14″ is skinny- like the vase in the pic.
In the city you can get branches at a garden center, florist or contact a landscaping service and see if they will give you branches free when they are pruning.
I have obtained branches free by putting an ad on craigslist.

@julies1949: I agree we might lose the effect. I’m going to try to get some branches to make samples from so I can see how they look. Good idea checking with landscaping companies and posting ads on craigslist! Thanks!

We have a park near our house and recently saw a bride to be walking through and picking up branches for her centerpieces. It make take awhile but its free!
