I think it depends on how much info you have, and how much time you have. I think the petal fans will take much longer to make, but you can fit a lot of info on it.
Both are really cute though so I think you just need to do a mockup of each to see which one you like more.
I would think the traditional ones would be easier to make, but I am not crafty. Great idea though!
If you need more space for all of the information, you could do a double sided stick-fan (first picture). Instead of having only one side, attach two sheets of paper to the stick and glue it together.
If you could put a hole in the popsicle stick (without splitting the wood) you could attach a fan program (with the brad) to the sitck. You would kind of have both ideas that way.
My FI and I made the traditional church style fans. It was easier of the two to make--but that's not to say that it won't take some time to make the fans. I also think the one with the stick is a little more functional and works a bit better as an actual fan.
Hey msmonicka! I'm 6/19/10 too! We are also having an outdoor wedding and are planning on making fan programs. I plan on making the fan on a stick programs. They just seem like they'd be sturdier fans than the others to me.
I really like the second ones!!, I wish I had a summer wedding just to do that hehe
I actually puchased fans (green and brown - my wedding colors) and will be doing seperate programs. Then I will have those large jars with the spicket at the bottom (I don't remember the name of that kind of jar!!) filled with water and iced tea for the guest upon arrival.
As I have said in other posts ... DIY is not one of my strengths!! Just show me a website I can order it from!!!
I originally wanted to do the paneled fan program because it looked more elegant and you can fit a lot more. I ran across a tutorial though and many people commented to say they had difficulty making it, and because the cardstock required for the fan to be functional is so thick that it was expensive to make in the end.
Here's the tutorial if you're interested:

So I decided to do the basic fans instead, since my ceremony is pretty basic and I don't want to spend a lot of time and money on the programs.
I thinking about the petals one in my wedding! I love the look of them :D Soo cute!
Well we opted to do the original church style ones (1st pic). I found them at a great price on wedoweddings.com
My opinion is to go with the traditional church ones. I've gone to many weddings and people don't like to read. For the most part they want to know who's who in the wedding party and at what point you will say I do.
I DIY my paddle fan program this weekend and it's so simple to do.
i really like the petal ones! I would use Miss Mascara's tutotial for her save the dates and go with that! Good for you for thinking of wayts to keep your guests cool!
Another route would be to go with a more traditional program and have a basket of fans near the back of the ceremony location for guests to grab that may need one.
We did the second version of the fan in your bottom picture they were super easy and they worked out quite well!
Traditional is easier but the ones that spread out are much much cooler!

I ran this in the ceremony boards but it is a DIY project so I thought I would run it here also.
So we are having an outdoor wedding and my attendants will be giving each guest personalized bottles of water as their seated. I was trying to think of other ways to keep my guests cool.
I absolutely love the idea of our programs being on hand-held fans. But which one do I choose? I really like the tradtional church style on a stick but the 5 petal ones are very interesting and different.
What do you think?
