I really wouldn't reccomend Sharpies. They don't hold up if you plan on actually *using* the platter. However, I would reccomend paint markers. I would also use a sealer over the platter after you get home to make sure it all stays intact.
They make special markers for ceramic that you could buy which would hold up better than markers. I agree that you also need some sort of protective barrier over it--if you don't plan on using it, a coat of clear acrylic spray paint would work.
Good luck and sounds like a great idea!

My FI and I were going to go the "no guestbook" route and just have little wish books on the tables at the reception, but that it dawned on us that some people can only make it to the wedding ceremony. Therefore, we need an actual guestbook of some sort, but not being crazy about just a book that will sit on my shelf for years to come, we were thinking of doing the guest book platter idea. Buying these from a website is so expensive! So, weddingbee, do you think that just buying a nice white ceramic platter and using sharpie markers to sign names on will be ok? Do you think the sharpies will hold up on the platter? Thanks!
