... and, if it makes a difference, here's a link to the makeup artist's site: http://christireynoldsmakeupartistry.com/
$1000+ does seem like a big chunk to spend on hair and makeup. I don't think there is anything wrong with DIYing your hair and makeup, lots of people do it! I would just make sure your friends are totally comfortable doing your hair on the big day (it's a lot of pressure!)
I went to her website... does she actually do hair or are you having someone else come out in addition to her? Maybe you could just pick one to have done professionally, either the hair or the makeup, and DIY the other. That could be a savings for you. I definitely think you could do both on your own though, after a few trial runs!
Thanks Blueshoes! That vendor does just makeup, but she partners with someone who does hair. She already let us know that we'd need to do hair + makeup for a minimum of five people. She'd be travelling a little less than two hours to get to our wedding location, so that's her reasoning. Otherwise, I'd do just makeup for myself and anyone else who wanted it. I can't find anyone else in our wedding location area (Lake Tahoe, California) to do makeup - I've been having the hardest time with finding vendors. I have bad skin and was really hoping to leave makeup up to an expert, but I'm wondering if it just makes more sense to DIY.
I'd love to hear stories about other bees' DIY hair/makeup experiences. What worked/didn't work? Did you feel like you missed out on the whole morning-of pampering experience? I've always looked forward to drinking mimosas & having someone else take care of that part of the day. :)

I've been looking for a hair and makeup artist(s) for the last few months. After lots of phone calls, two trials ($150 down the drain,) I'm contemplating just doing my own hair and makeup. I've thought about heading to the makeup counter at Nordstrom a few times between now and the wedding and just perfecting the look that I want. I have friends who are decent with styling hair, and I'm sure could make it work if we practice a few times and I am clear on exactly what I want.
My alternative is to spend $550 and my bridesmaids $500 ($125 each) on a hair/makeup team I found that I think will be a good fit. With a total budget of around $8,000, I'm just not sure that it makes sense to spend $1,000+ on hair and makeup alone. And, I don't feel comfortable with asking my bridesmaids to spend that much. They've already let me know that they don't think they need it. (The hair/makeup team will only come out for a minimum of five people.)
Thoughts??
