I've done hand-made ornaments before--no pics, sorry. But they were a big hit. They were little stuffed, felt owls. I found a tutorial online. Also I'm working on a scarf for mom that keeps expanding ridiculously. Oh well, first try. My roommate embroidered some tea towels for my house a couple years ago and I love them =]
It's super rainy and cold and yucky here in St Louis =(
I'm working on knitting a couple of market bags (like this) for Christmas. Of course, I was working on knitting these for LAST Christmas...
knitting scarves is always fun, if you're looking for a more hands-on project!
I am DIYing the gift for my FILs, but it's just some pictures in black picture frames. Another thing I might do for a couple of my friends is to get some blank notecards and envelopes, emboss some cute stamped stuff on the cards and then line the envelopes! Also, I designed recipe cards for my sister for her birthday and am getting the recipe card box from crate and barrel for her.
Last year I made a crap ton of baked goods! You could also try making your own beer or wine (if you start now it should be ready on time)! Other ideas: making your own candy, sewing personalized stockings, making jewelry... Good luck!
The market bags - are a great gift. My uncle makes them with left over fabric that he gets from his company. He works as a tech fixing sewing machines. I've gotten a silk/cotton blend for Mother's day and I got a gorgeous floral print this past spring for Easter.
My daughter and I usually make bracelets for the women in our family.
My good friend made some throw pillows for me recently. Well, she actually bought plain pillows and made cases for them so that I could wash them easily. Anyway, the pillows match our guestroom perfectly, and I love them!
I will be doing embossed christmas cards for everyone (on a tight budget)... I may make really cool letters for my son, sort of like these... but maybe with trucks etc because he is only 2
I'm making homemade vanilla extract. So easy! Ordered vanilla beans online and then you steep them for a couple of months in vodka. Also ordered cute bottles and tags. I will also probably bake vanilla pound cakes and gift the extract with the cake.
I always end up making a tie fleece blanket for someone! they're very easy to make and everyone loves them.
i was thinking about baking cookies as presents this year. but not sure how many varities of cookies yet.
but i think i am going to pull out my stamping set and make christmas cards again since i still have supplies from last year.
@vttp926- Michael's carries adorable cookie boxes from Martha's line specifically for holiday cookie giving. I used some last year and they really made the gift look great. You get about 10 boxes for $10-- and they offer all different designs.
I posted on this recently too!

I'm thinking of doing jars of pre-made cookie and muffin mixes. That way people can make the cookies/muffins for the holidays. And I'm also making Blurb books for my parents of wedding pictures. Geez, I better get to work soon!!
I've given out packets of seasoning to make red beans & rice. You can always add the red beans & rice too. I took the seasoning recipe from Treebeard's and put it in tiny spice bags.
I've also bought glass christmas trees and filled them with layers of different colored popcorn.
I don't have pictures yet - but I'm going to try some Xylene transfers and glass etching this year. The glass etching is VERY easy - I just etched some wine glasses for a friends' wedding and they turned out awesomely. It's a relatively cheap project if you're doing it bulk, too!
@sassypants- do you know if those boxes are sturdy enough to mail off? I will definitely have to be sending them off so I been looking at cookie tins but if it is lighter and still as sturdy then maybe I won't have to worry about the weight when I mail them at the post office. I just have to make sure it is cookies that can hold up well to shipping.

I know its early but I've started to think about holiday gift exchanges and I'm curious to see if anyone has any great DIY holiday gifts ideas. Are you planning on making anything for anyone this year? Have you made something in the past that was a huge hit? If so, post some pics or links for inspiration!
It's becoming very hard to buy gifts for the people in my life who seem to have everything and I'd also love to have some fun craft projects to pass the time as it's already cold and hailing here today in the Northeast.
