most fonts, particularly script fonts have extra characters called glyphs that can make nice interesting pieces of art. In Illustrator you can view the gyphs palette by going to the type menu and selecting glyphs, I suggest viewing the glyphs one font at a time.

also some script letters like l or even parenthesis and hyphens have a little flair to them and if turned on their side or at angle can easily make nice design elements.

I think photoshop is a lot easier than illustrator.  You might want to try  a 30 day trial   What do you have in mind for your design? You might be able to make it work in Word using .jpg images and text.  I have photoshop and illustrator so if you need help, let me know.
