We are having a small wedding, 50 people or less. I have looked all over for nautical/beachy wedding invites we like, but nothing fits the bill. We don’t need a lot of invitations so I thought DIYing might be fun and more cost effective. But i know NOTHING about doing invitations. I’m not a graphic designer and don’t even know where to start.
Can some of you super talented ladies offer advice?

I haven’t started doing my own invitations yet, but look into the Martha Stewart line of stationery. Some of her stuff has software included to make sure everything is centred properly and looks nice. (I personally haven’t used it though.)
Otherwise, just get coloured cardstock and/or resume paper from somewhere like Office Depot and fiddle around with Microsoft Word. You can DIY stickers with labels, buttons, etc. to put on it to look nicer. Go through a few printed drafts on scrap paper first.

These may be to simplictic for you but this sight has free templates and downloads with nautical themes! We did not use it for out invites but we did use a few of the monograms and such. You just fill in your names and colors and they will create it for you. We just had them printed at a local kinkos. http://www.weddingchicks.com/freebies/

Have you looked at Wedding Paper Divas yet? They have some really cool beachy/nautical-themed invitations. Here’s an example:
Or there’s Epherma Custom Letterpress…they can make custom wedding invitations. Here’s an example of a nautical-themed set they did recently:

How about buying some blank cards and using organza (any colour) and some mini shells/starfish to create a beachy yet elegant feel? I think these would be fairly budget friendly to make 🙂
