I also have a long engagement and am so happy I do! We set a date for a little less than 2 years after we got married but I think it’s so worth it because there’s lots of time to get everything done! I’ve started on a lot of my DIYs already for a similar reason- I will be in university for 8 months so that only leaves this summer and next! You’re definitely not starting too early. 🙂

That being said, photoshop is awesome for designing your own invitations just the way you want. Since you have lots of time, I’d recommend learning the program and go that route. You can also find templates online if you think it might be too hard but they won’t be quite as custom. I used photoshop for mine and it works great because it has so much flexibility.. Good luck!

You might try getting some inspiration from Pinterest. There is so much free art and wonderful fonts out there http://www.fontsquirrel.com is good. With a little attention to layout you could also create something that will work just fine in word (although sometimes fine tuning can be tricky). Adobe Illustrator is good too, but the learning curve is much steeper than with something like one of the standard MS programs.

Good Luck!
