Lots of people do, but I recommend having someone there to take the pics... lots of ways for wayward guests to waste film!
I am so excited about our Photobooth! We couldn't afford one, but then my FI surprised me with an application on his mac that he will set up at our venue the night before. I am going to hang a backdrop and all we have to do is hook up the mac to the printer. The guests push the space bar and VOILA!
I just ordered a Polaroid Pogo online and that is what I'm hoping to use. We already own nice DLSR cameras that we can hook up to it and we'll just get someone to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't run out of film. Going to test-run it when I get it in the mail but I have high hopes!
What about asking a friend or family member to man the station for you? Or at least keep an eye on it? That way your guests will have a bit of direction or someone to take the group photos.
Great ideas ~ I think we will give it a shot. I like the idea of the chalkboard that people can hold up with a message for the photo... We'll see how it goes!
There's an awesome program I found online; I'm 99% sure it's called "Partybooth" that you can download onto your computer for a mere $35 and your computer and printer serve as a photo booth! When I was researching this idea, I figured that all in - my computer, buying a photo printer, photo paper, backdrop & props would be around $250-300 - a far cry from the usual $1200 for a photobooth rental.
As for hanging the backdrop, could you use the nicer 3M hooks? They won't leave any marks on the venue, but could be used to hang curtains or other linens.

I love the photobooth idea but there is NO way that I have the funds to have it professionally staffed. Has anyone ever set up a little backdrop and left a polaroid camera and let the guests do it themselves?
