Well exghawaii, I made a cake stand using a large serving plate and a soup bowl. You can see my work and instructions on my blog:

Maybe you can find a large rectangular tray instead of a plate and maybe one or two bowls / cups as the base. I found my items at Ikea, if you have one near you that would be a place to go since they have a huge selection and the prices are hard to beat.

another option would be to take a rectangular cake pan, turn it upside-down, and decorate it.

Martha Stewart weddings had a really cute idea last year, it was either summer or fall 2008.  She put door handles on the bottom of plywood and pinned ribbon on the outside of the wood.  You could do whatever size you wanted.  I love this!  It doesn’t stand very high, though.  Hope it helps.
