Our dining room chairs are in bad shape. Structurally they’re fine but anything that contains fabric (so the seat and double sided back) is just terrible. The chairs are close to 20 years old so the light ivory fabric has seen better days. It also doesn’t help that our kitty had clawed the shit out of the backs of the chairs. They’re almost embarrassing to display so they pretty much serve as a coat rack so our jackets and sweatshirts cover the backs.

Now that the wedding is past us, I’d really like to try my hand at reupholstering them. I know that I could get it done professionally but I would rather not spend a fortune on these. We already have a heavy duty staple gun and I’ve been scoping out different fabrics to use. I’m a little nervous about taking on such a task since I’ve never done it before but I figure the worst that can happen is I fail and we have to cough up the green to get them done professionally.

Does anyone have any DIY reupholstering experiences that they can share? Any tutorials that may help me?

I'm interested in this exact subject, myself; I'd like to hear some tips as well. I was scrubbing/steam cleaning our dining room chairs today, prepping for Thanksgiving next week. Ours are an ivory/beige-ish color, and like yours, they've just seen better days. Especially with two kiddos, and two pets Frown I thought to myself, hmmm, these wouldn't be too hard to re-cover.......

If you do a search on pinterest, you will find a LOT of blogposts on tutorials.

    Here is one: http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2011/06/how-to-reupholster-chair-part-3.html

I am also planning to reupholster a chair I have, I figure it doesn't look too hard. I've been browsing the internet for upholstery fabrics. Even Joanns has some nice ones, and if you get their email coupons you can get fabric for up to 50% off.

Look up a couple tutorials, then be sure to buy a little extra fabric, and experiment, the first time I did it I bought enough to cover 1 extra chair just in case. I did the first chair, and fine-tuned my technique by the second chair. I ended up not having to start over on the first chair, but did pull some staples out and tweaked it a but after I finished the rest of the chairs. Make sure you get an upholstry fabric, if you get the wrong fabric it won't hold up to being pulled tight and then sat on!
