I bet you could do these, easy! If you can bake a cake and dip things in chocolate, you can totally do these! just follow the directions and try them out first. Maybe make practice ones for thanksgiving or Christmas (or holiday of your choice).
Thank you rabbit! Totally great idea doing a "trial-run" for Thanksgiving or Christmas! You rock! Now, time to bust out the baking apron!
Love it!!!
I have those sized cookie cutters and a box of cake mix... I'm going to try it next weekend!! :)
I make those all of the time for birthdays and other occasions! Being a person who is not the best baker, they have always come out great and I get a ton of compliments! I say go for it!
From experience its a lot harder than it looks. Especially if you like your DIY projects to look professional and not DIY.
Aw these are so cute! Hmm maybe I could make them for my friend's bday next month...
Oh cake pops, how I adore thee! Bakerella is the best, even if her creations aren't necessarily feasable for us mere mortals.
The cake balls are actually super easy to make. They're basically cake pops off the stick, or homemade truffles. My SO and bro-in-law love them.
Make sure you freeze the cake pops before you dip them in chocolate! The chocolate will harden faster & the cakes will stay put on the sticks & not fall into the melted chocolate... :)
Also, I've never made these but I would probably put a royal icing ring around the bottom of where you inserted the stick into the cake. This will also help keep the cake in place on the stick!
I agree texasmeredith, but if she develops a method she might get the results for which she's looking!
mmm. smashed up cake mixed with icing- yummy! I am definitely going to find a reason to make these :)
@RB: If I remember correctly, Bakerella's tips are basically the same as yours, haha. Great minds!
Did anyone actually click through and check out the Bakerella post? CUTEST PROPOSAL EVER!
Those are so cute! I'm definitely going to try those, too. Thanks for sharing them, and good luck with making them!
I love baking & think I'll have to try these. really cute favor idea.
Oh, I was watching Paula Deen today, and she added paraffin wax to some dipping chocolate--it made it very shiny and prevented it from melting as fast! Just an idea!
I made cake ball versions once and I think they were too smooshy b/c they kept falling off the suckers! Booo. These would be adorable favors =]
LOVE those things! I'm too much of a perfectionist to make them myself (I'm not the greatest at making baked goods pretty, but I get really frustrated when it doesn't look right)...but I love the idea. Go for it!
I made a TON of these last valentine's day. I wish I had pictures! They are super easy.
I made vanilla-cake ones, red velvet cake ones, oreo ones, and then a whole bunch of truffles. :p I was a candy making machine.
They were tricky at first, but I have it down to a fine art now.
@50footbride: share your tips please? :D
Here are the instructions from Bakerella.
WOW! This was actually done as a proposal to someone!!!
Thanks everyone for inspiring me to go ahead and take a shot at baking up some of the darlings! Great tips from everyone! I'll definitely be back to share some pics!
Hm, some tips I can think of now...
Put the cake mixture in the freezer, let it get sort of solid (but not frozen!) before you cut or shape it. Then put it BACK in the freezer to harden before you dip/cover
Keep your tools cleaaan. If cake smooshies get on it, clean it off, or stuff will get all over it
Make sure your dipping stuff is REALLY deep, or you'll dent stuff.
Most importantly, only have small batches of stuff out at a time, i.e. don't have ALL the cake parts out to be covered at once. They'll get mushy.
Oh, and have a helper!!!
@fifty I think you're thinking of cake pops... not these cake cutout pop things! But I was planning to make those anyways so thanks for the tips :D
@50, when I froze mine, I found that the frosting I used didn't freeze up very well! It was cold, but still super smooshy. What frosting do you recommend? Canned? I actually used a homemade frosting which I think was my downfall. Damn. I want to make these again! But they are such a pain....
@cp- Nope. I'm talking about the rounded ones and the cut-out ones.
@ejs- Ok, best is to use the canned frosting. I am a purist, but when I did it with homemade it went meh on me. Also, you can make the cake a little dryer (in a less oily way) so that it doesn't have so much stuff that won't harden.
Also, the bark that I found worked the best was this cheap-ass white vanilla candy bark. I originally tried it with ghiradelli white chocolate and dark chocolate, and those were BITCHES. The 99 cent Walmart shit worked the best.
@50, thanks dude! Oh i totally rocked the almond bark. You can heat it up so often and it just melts so easily.
Homemade frosting is just soooo good, i thought i was intensifying the awesome when in fact i sabotaged it =]
Time to remake these with the cheap canned frosting and nix some oil.....mmmmmmm. Damn this post-wedding diet.
@ejs- Mmmm. Eat extra for me plz.
P.S. If you need any troubleshooting/emergency help, I'm all up on that. :p If you pm me, it goes to my email, and that is on my blackberry, so I'm usually super stat available. lol.
Oh I SOOO love this IDEA!! Bakerella if you are out there..thank you for your awesome tutorial!
I will have to test these out before I go through w. my new fangled plan! haha.
I already wanted my guests to have cupcakes at my wedding..but now I think the 'cupcake bites' would be an even better idea! :)
I now just have to make sure I can make them...:)
Anyway, great post!! :)

OMG!! I found these and simply love them! They are called wedding cake pops and I'm trying to muster up the courage to make my own! Do you think they are too hard for a amateur baker DIY planning bride?
