I'm not sure if you're looking for something for a large multi-tiered cake, or for smaller single-tier cakes. But we had an 8 inch cake at each table and used glass dinner plates and parfait glasses. Turn the parfait glass upside-down, put a line of clear caulk along the top edge of the glass and set your plate on top. Takes a few days to completely set.
We made about 25 this way, and it was really easy. We got a lot of compliments and people even took many of them home at the end of the night! You can get the glasses and plates for a buck or less at thrift shops and wal-mart, and mixing and matching looks really cute! Sure beats the $10+ it costs for 'real' ones.
Similar to above I've seen those square short vases turned upside down to hold a cake on a cake board. If the vases are clear you can put a flower or something in them. I think Mrs. Pengy did this? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong Bee...
This is a great how to stand on martha stewart.com http://tinyurl.com/6onhra
if the link doesn't work search for cake stands then choose martha stewart weddings in the results. Good luck!
We looked around for items that weren't being sold as cake stands but would still work beautifully. Since we have a rustic/nature theme, we went to a nearby plant nursery and hit the jackpot! Now, two of our three cakes will be sitting on stepping stones that were designed to look like tree slices ($11 for that purchase). Depending on your theme, you may be able to find items that aren't cake stands, but will work as cake stands for your decorating scheme.
These cake stands are very fun and can be painted to match your colors.

I made our cakestands (we're doing centerpiece cakes). I just blogged about how I did it.
You can read about it here.
