Where are you located?? Djs can get expensive. But they also do a lot more work than what poeple think. (FI Djs) I would look on craigs list for you area or look at some local clubs and see if any of the DJs there would be willing to work.
Check out http://www.carcanodj.com/index2.html He just did my wedding and kept the party going. Even if he didnt have songs guests wanted he downloaded them right than and there so everyone was happy.
I went with thepros for $695, but I'm not sure if I can recommend them, yet. :) I've seen some people posting on CL for $400--that's as inexpensive as I've seen. I think you can reasonably expect to find someone reasonably experienced in the $1,000-1,500 range.
I used Joey Inez of Mixterious Force for my wedding back in May. He was all kinds of awesome: laidback, non-cheesy, and very flexible. When we booked him last year, his rate was $1000 for 6 hours including set-up. Even my husband was impressed and he's pretty nitpicky about music, plus he wanted to see the dj's equipment before booking. Joey doesn't have a website but he does have reviews on Project Wedding.
