@ginnyc, we're going with Juke Box Bandstand for our DJ. They did a friends wedding last year and it was a good time. We went to another wedding this past weekend that used Prime Time DJ - I personally wasn't a fan, but it could have been the requirements placed on the DJ for entertainment. Too much talking and "group" dances for my taste.
HIGH ENERGY DJ'S out of waterloo. they are AWESOME. $595 is their price too..even better! they play 2 free hours dinner music. They have been around for a long time. google their name.. they have a website :)
I agree with Mrs Krings. I am going with High Energy. bonus**I met with the owner, he's pretty easy on the eyes ;-)
We are using Double Platnium DJ. Bill (the owener) is super cool. Totally not your cheesy DJ. The owner always takes the first booking for any date, so you'll most likely get him to DJ your reception. He has a flat fee no matter how long he is there. He's just a cooolll guy.
As a wedding planner, I have dealt with many djs :)
So far I really like Madison Mobile DJ and Midwest Sound DJ!
Good Luck!
@ginnyc: Madison Mobile DJ, Double Platinum and Jukebox are fantastic. If you are still looking, Celebrations is another good DJ in the Madison area. Sound by Design is out of Milwaukee but will travel to Madison and they are definitely great at keeping and maintaining that party atmosphere. They also offer combo packages on lighting and/or photo booth if interested in any of those services.
We used Magnum entertainment out of Milwaukee. We got 6 hours for $450. They were great. The dance floor was packed all night. They probably one of the best wedding DJ's I have seen. They didn't chagre us for travel either.
Met with Bill, from Double Platinum today, we're going to book with him. He did tell us though, that he doesn't really do much of the DJing himself anymore, as he can better concentrate on problem solving for any of the other DJs that have gigs that weekend, or whatever. Just thought I'd share what he said, since @corrc7131 said he always takes first booking. He said he matches couples up with the DJ that would best fit their needs/personalities, which is really nice.

Any bees out there know of a good DJ in the Madison area?
We're looking for someone who will play at a volume low enough for people to have a conversation and have a variety of music.
