I would definitely go by word of mouth.
The DJ I used had done my cousin's wedding 2 years before mine and my sister's wedding the year before mine. They've gotten many rave reviews on the Hudson Valley board here on Weddingbee as well as other review sites. It's a husband and wife team- The DJ Solution.
They are based in Poughkeepsie, but they may travel down the NYC (and I'm guessing might charge less than NYC based DJs). They do all kinds of music- basically whatever you want them to play.
Here's the link to my review on the Westchester board:

look at my vendor reviews on this board. i used scratch academy (djay jung) awesome!
We looked into a bunch of DJ's but I have to give FI all the credit - he was in charge of it.
We're looking into this company called The Pros - they do photo, video & DJ all in one pkg but you can pick & choose the services individually too and you can choose your DJ from their staff instead of them sending you whoever they want. Their basic package is less than $700 and I think it maxes out at $1200.
I'll ask him for the others when he gets home.
I think meeting with them is important, too. I emailed a ton of DJs, and had it narrowed down to two - we met with both of them, and we left our first meeting, with the DJ who I thought was it, totally positive he was NOT going to do our wedding. Our second DJ meeting was a ton of fun, we really clicked with her, and I'm totally excited for the wedding - Carol Moore of A Starry Night DJs http://www.astarrynight.com/
Gilneas, Carol is our DJ too, and I'm getting married the day before you! :)
@BrooklynBride10 - That's so cool! Where in NYC are you getting married?
@Gilneas - Our ceremony is at his parents church in Greenpoint, bklyn, and our reception is at Giando's on the Water in brooklyn.
Where are you getting married?
We're getting married in Tarrytown, NY. We had SUCH a hard time finding a DJ because we didn't want a cheesy person, and a lot of people were put off by our smaller venue/guest list (story of my life planning this wedding). We actually had a DJ tell us, half way through our meeting, that he didn't want to do it! I got such a great vibe from Carol, too, I'm very excited for the wedding. And you have a fabulous date, with the three day weekend, too!
(PS- I went to look at some of your other posts, and your dress is incredible!!)
I went to college in Tarrytown! It's a beautiful town, and it's absolutely gorgeous in the fall!
My meeting with Carol was amazing. We talked for an hour and a half, about all sorts of stuff. I was so excited to find someone I totally clicked with, and I love that she doesn't do any of the cheesy stuff.
I don't understand why a DJ would have a problem with a smaller venue/guestlist! They'd still have to play the same amount of time.
I'm glad you found Carol and got everything worked out. It sounds like your wedding will be awesome. :)

Hi Bees, Please recommend DJs for New York. I think people remember how much fun they have at a wedding more than anything else. So it's important to me we have a DJ whose interactive and cares about the crowd and can adjust accordingly. What criteria do/did you look for in your DJ search? Thank you.
