Ya - I think so!
Our DJ was the DJ who worked the fashion show at one of the bridal shows! I also was finding it so hard to decide and seeing them in action at the show sold me on them!
They might not invite you to a wedding but a stag and doe or other party I think it is totally reasonable!
Good Luck
Absolutely!
We didn't have to with our DJ though. Just in conversation with him we knew we couldn't have anyone else. We were looking for the cool, NOT cheesy DJ and found him right away. Have a personal conversation with the DJ and ask what songs he'd play in what instance. If their what you'd pick then you know you have a similar personality, if not, move on. You don't want to have to pick every song for your wedding. They should be able to feel the two of you out (or ask the right questions), to know which songs to play. They should also have enough experience to know what keeps a party going. If you have doubts ask when their next wedding is and if they have any references. Our DJ had book upon book of photos and thank you cards.
Thanks you guys! I think entertainment is so important, and regardless of reviews, I'm a littly iffy about booking DJs without hearing them work first.
Is anyone completely turned off by DJs who are basically sideshow Vegas acts? Monitors? Lasers? WTF is the Cupid Shuffle?
I totally think its reasonable to ask to see them in person BUT, some of them are reluctant to let you sneak a peek at a wedding. Just for the parties privacy. If that's the case, they should have a video of themselves at a wedding. My DJ happened to have a bunch so it was never necessary to go out of my way, we just saw it right when we met him. We chose him because he was young, liked the same music we like and was really receptive the things we mentioned we liked. And, his style is great because he's exciting but won't be harassing the folks that absolutely do NOT want to dance. That's just mortifying and I don't want it to happen to my guests!

I am looking for DJs for my wedding next October. I have a few that have good reviews. I would like to be able to tell what style of DJ they are, how they handle a crowd, etc.
Is it weird to ask to see them in action? My mom says asking to come visit another party/wedding/whatever is totally reasonable. Is it?
