I’ve been debating doing my own for years. I’m so extremely picky about my hair. Ever since my hair stylist moved out of state, I just havent been happy with what I’ve had done. I have extremely thick, long hair and stylists just get impatient with me, even when I call and tell them in advanced. I also only go to Aveda salons. For an example, I’m finally able to do something crazy with my hair. I’m not working right now since my husband has an internship and we might move soon. I asked the stylist for blue ombre lower than my shoulders and showed a picture. It turned out above my ears! I feel my mom or myself could have done a much better job!
I always see girls who do their coloring themselves and it’s always beautiful. Have any other ladies gotton sick of the chair and chosen to do it at home? I would love to hear any stories!

@LilySparks: I started coloring my hair at home about a year ago. It is AMAZING! PERFECT color (high and low lights… I dye to a light/ medium blonde. Naturally a dark blonde with some grey) and about $10 every 6 weeks or so… instead of $100 at a salon.
I was tired of spending so much money on my hair when I knew so many people do it themselves. I figured if it went horribly wrong, I would just pay a lot to fix it and never look back.
My advice is to do a lot of research… watch youtube videos, go to websites, find a hair color board (if one exists) and ask questions, have a back up plan if it doesn’t go well.
Best beauty decision I’ve made! Good luck!

My mom dyes in for me because I don’t think I could do it myself without missing spots, but it has always turned out great! I’ve never tried highlights, just all one color. I have dark brown hair. Although I do think I’m developing an allergy to boxed dye because my head gets really itchy, which does not happen in a salon, but oh well lol

i bleach and color my own hair. i have my license in cosmetology, but color is not something i enjoy doing. ipretty much just do whatever, haha. i don’t always follow a specific method or technique and i also don’t take my hair seriously, so if it doesn’t come out exactly how i had “planned” i don’t care. my hair is pink, purple, and blue, so to me, any mistakes look like they are intentional.

I’ve done my own hair (or instructed friends) since highschool. I also have thick hair, and I was sick of getting charged extra for it. I’ve done almost everything to my hair regarding colours. I loved having pink, but since graduating college, I’ve kept it to red or black

I used to get highlights for years but I started to hate the way they looked. I just started bleaching and toning my hair allover. I am still learning but I needed to leave the bleach on longer the first time to get the orange out of my hair. Last night I toned it again and put it on my hair dry! Big mistake! It’s got some faint purple in it now that will wash out. I will tone it again soon with something more beigey. All in all though I’m happy to be doing it myself again. Don’t buy boxed color for blonde though! Doesn’t work at all!

i color my own hair but it is all one color. if i were doing something like highlights or 2 tone, i would go to the salon.
when i was in middle school. my mom home highlighted my hair for me. after the first few applications, i looked like a bleach blonde with really dark roots. in high school, i got my hair professionally highlighted.

I have been highlighting, dying and cutting my own hair for probably the last four years. I have been very light blonde for the last year or so (not quite platinum, but close), and it’s super easy. I just bleach and then tone with a purple tinted toner. I like my hair color to be very ashy, and I’ve never had a hair dresser get it as ashy as I’ve been able to get it myself. Before I was fully light blonde, I did my own highlights, with foils and everything. It was a little tricky figuring out how to do the back of my head at first, but considering how much it costs to get a full set of highlights it was worth the inconvenience. I have always kept a tube of color close to my natural color (dark ashy blonde) just in case I make a mistake, but I’ve never had to use it for that. I just used it about a month ago though, because I’m tired of being so blonde, I’m trying to grow out my natural color now.
As far as products, don’t buy boxed dye! I get all my supplies from Sally’s Beauty, you can get salon quality products, and they work really well.

@MrsBonJovi: I’m glad it turned out so well for you!! Saves a good 600 at least a year!
@lilchicana: I’m imagining what your hair looks like in my head. I bet it’s gorgeous!
@luckyshot: I love Sallys!! I love walking through the store, imagining being able to do others hair and my own.

Once a month because I have rampant graying. I do it at home, the cheap way, from a box.

@LilySparks: I don’t because I have naturally very dark hair and I go blonde. I wouldn’t want to risk that on my own.

I used to, then after 10 years I had an orange disaster! I want to do it again though, I need a change.

@LilySparks: I’ve been dying my own for years. The handful of times I’ve had it done professionally weren’t significantly better than what I could have done myself.
