Well, today I just went and got my third bikini wax ever, but they were all a year apart, I never kept up with it and shaved inbetween waxes, so it was basically like my first time all over again. The pain involved with getting waxed is just so unbearable for me (I am part Greek and part Romanian with THICK black hair) and I cannot believe I did it for a third time. I love how long it lasts and not having to worry about shaving, but I just don't know if I can do it again, which sucks because next year when I get married I really want to be waxed for the wedding day and honeymoon.

What I wanted to know is if it gets easier if you keep up with it? I have heard this before but I just don't believe it lol. How much easier does it get? Some people have said it gets WAY easier the second time, and some say it's really gradual but yes it gets easier. Let's say the first time is a 10 in terms of pain on a 10-point scale, what would you say it is the 2nd time, 3rd time, etc.? I just want to know if it's worth the money and pain each month...

If you keep it up, it gets less painful. Also, if you go to a place that uses hard wax, it hurts less. Make sure you don't drink caffeine before going and consider taking an NSAID first.

I got my first on about 3 months ago and have gotten it done 2 more time since (every 4 weeks).  The difference between the first and second was HUGE.  It still hurt, but less.  More importantly, it look way less time.  I have super corse hair, so believe me, it was terrible the first time.  The third time was better too.  I will never go back to shaving.  Good Luck!  I know it is differnet for each person.  May just try it once more in 4 weeks and see the difference.  If you don't see an improvement, then stop.

@mrsSonthebeach:  I don't drink caffeine anyway, so yay for me! lol

@meskimk:  That's so good to hear...I think I will do it a second time in a month no matter what but I am absolutely terrified haha. I did notice the last two time I did it that when my hair grew back in it was a lot thinner...so hopefully it will make the second wax much less painful.

It gets way way easier as you go along! Also the more you wax the less hair grows back over time (those occasional spots of broken skin you get from waxing won't grow hair back) but it's very, very gradual. I've been alternating between an "enhanced" bikini wax and a brazilian for a few years now and the difference between regularly waxed hair and not regularly waxed hair is quite noticable now.

@mrsSonthebeach:  This is totally true. I have been to places that use both regular/strip wax and the hard wax and hard wax hurts SO MUCH LESS. Still not a great feeling, but really not as bad. I have been told that the hard wax sticks to your skin less and therefore hurts less.

It gets much, much easier, but only if you keep up with it. Once a year is ALWAYS going to feel like the first time.

I go to a place that uses hard wax, and I've been doing it for about two years now. My hair 'down there' is much MUCH thinner now and it doesn't hurt nearly as badly, and I don't need to get it done as often.

Now I go once about every two months.

If I were you and had very, very thick hair, I'd go get touched up every few weeks. If you go BEFORE all the hair comes back in, it'll hurt less because less hair getting pulled out = less pain.

@batwoman:  thank you for responding...good to know!

@radical4peace:  How do you know if they use hard wax? Does that just not involve strips? The wax my lady uses is a dark brown wax that she puts on with a popsicle stick and then puts a cloth over to pull it off...I don't know if I would ever switch though because she is great! She is always done in 10 minutes, really quick and efficient, never any spare hairs, and in general she is a fun person to talk to.

@rachelmichelle:  Ohhh I see....so if you go before it's out of control it's kind of like you are just waxing less at a time? That actually makes sense. I do notice that when it grows back it's almost like it grows back in cycles...some come back sooner and some don't grow for weeks later.

I thought there was no way in hell I could even survive a second brazilian wax.  Turns out--they aren't kidding when they say the hair grows back with a different texture, and less thick.  The second one was LEAGUES less painful than the first one.  The third and fourth were equally less painful (Seriously, not even bad.  I mean, it's waxing but it was actually better than when I wax things at home!).  So...after my fourth one right before my wedding I had to schedule my next one six weeks out because I was going to be on vacation during the normal 4th week return window.  Well turns out, AF arrived and I couldn't go during the 6th week and had to schedule almost 8 weeks later.  Holy hell, that was awful.  The hair had plenty of time to grow back out and it was not cool!!

    @kkish3:  Yep, exactly. :)

Also hard wax doesn't require cloth strips- that's soft wax.

Hard wax hardens as it cools, and can just be pulled right off by the waxing technician.

I highly suggest going to the Bliss Spa if you have any near you - as close to painless as possible!

@AmyFarrahFowler:  Dangit I got excited! I just looked it up and there aren't any in Michigan :( lol. Do they use hard wax? I would consider changing salons since everyone seems to think hard wax is better! Even though I really like my place :( lol. If it really is better though then I will find a different place.

@kkish3:  Yes, they use hard wax -  other places that use it are not as painful as strips, but Bliss really is the best!

Get laser hair removal.  It only takes a few times waxing to equal the cost.  Really.  And the skin after laser hair removal is like no hair ever grew.  Baby's bottom smooth.  So much better.

@Bunny82:  Really??? I thought it was like hundreds of dollars per session? How much does it cost per session/how often do you have to go? Is it painful at all?

From my experience it does get better but (like everyone else is saying) you have to keep it up regularly. The hard wax is much better than the strips. Also, I have been to several different places and have found that in general the quicker they are, the more intense the pain.  I guess it's a bit of a trade-off: 10 minutes of insane pain vs 30 minutes of more tolerable pain.  The other thing you could try is laser.  Even if you don't do it for permanent hair removal, a couple of treatments will thin things out so waxing is more managable.  Good luck!

My beautician explained that the reason it hurts so much is because the hairs are "alive" and growing from deep inside the skin. The longer you leave it, the more it'll hurt because they'll get deeper.  Think of it a bit like a weed. If you leave a weed to grow the roots keep growing, cutting the top off makes it disappear in the short term but roots are still getting stronger and deeper.

Definitely gets less painful.  Also, I take an advil or 2 before going.  Helps as well.  O..1 more thing, don't go when it's pretty close to your cycle (before or after).  It's more painful/sensitive during that time of the month.

YES YES YES! I have been going monthly for over a year now and they really do become less painful. I do not shave between, as they recommended not to.

Well I spoke with my FI and we discussed finances and right now we can't afford for me to go every month :( but in a couple of months he will be searching for a new job so once he gets it and we can afford it I am definitely going to keep up with it....so basically I am going to have to have ONE MORE first time hahah.

@kkish3:  If you are only doing one area it is not that expensive.  It's when you get it done all over that you're talking thousands of dollars.  The salon I used to go to to get brazillian waxes cost me 95 dollars a visit.  The brazillian wax area at Ideal Image (which is nation wide and lifetime guaranteed) was only about four hundred and fifty dollars and they have deals all the time (like buy one and get one free or 60% off one area etc.).  When you think about it, that's less than getting a brazillian 5 times.

Also this is how it works:  You go in and get the treatment.  The next two weeks you have a bit of hair as it all falls out.  After that you have eight or so weeks of incredibly smooth skin with no hair at all.  Then the growth cycle starts again and you go back in for another session.  Each time you get it treated you lose about 10% of the hair forever until you don't go anymore.  That's roughly 6-10 appointments until you never have to worry about it ever again.  You can wake up any day and go to the beach without worrying ;)

And as for the pain it does hurt but in my opinion it hurts less than waxing.  It is also much faster.  And you never bleed so there is absolutely no lasting pain.  I can't recommend this enough for anyone that can afford it.  Really.

It will get much much easier if you keep doing it on a regular basis. You will get to feel NO PAIN at the end !!!

Here is another tip : do it once a month, right after your period is done, or maybe the last day of it. For some reason it does not hurt as much, maybe it's something to do with the hormones cycle and muscles being relaxed... believe me this will work ;))

it gets easier in the sense that you're not shocked anymore and you get your mind used to the fact that "this isnt fun". I don't mind it much after the 3rd time...but usually i used numbing cream to be honest.

I get Brazilians. When I got my first one my waxer told me that I handle pain extremely well but it was still really really painful. This last time it was unbelievably less painful (I get them once a month). The pain gets much easier to handle over time. Kind of how I used to cry every time I got my eyebrows waxed and years later now I can barely feel it lol.

The only reason I don't laser is the cost, but if you can afford it do it. Waxes do get easier, I have to go every 3weeks or so, as the longer I leave it the harder it gets. You will have to figure out your own cycle but just try not to let the hair get too long.

If you skip two months and shave etc in between, you will feel it when you next  wax, however you keep them up it will be fine.

    Good luck!

I use a hair cream instead because it works just as well, costs a million dollars less, is less personally invasive, and lasts just as long.

The difference between my first brazilian and the second was night and day.  There was less hair the second time and she used a combination of hard and soft wax.

There's a chain called European Wax Center that uses a dark purple wax that they pull off without fabric strips.  Not sure how it works but I prefer it over all others and I have been getting bikini waxes for over 10 years now!

Definitely take 800 mg of ibuprofen an hour before (that's right....it's 4 pills!)

Also try to schedule it in the middle of your cycle.  It does get easier.

It definitely depends on the person.  I started about 2 months ago, I've been going every 3 weeks and the pain is nothing compared to the first time I did it.  If you have a European Wax Center by you, I would strongly suggest you go there.  They do not use wax strips, which I think is more painful.  Keep at it a few more times, you will get used to it.

I agree that the esthetician matters.  It can be hard finding one you like sometimes.

I also agree that the hard wax (the kind that they use without the fabric strips) is less painful.  European Wax Center is OK; I hate the 'hard sell' tactics they use to get you to come back and won't go there because of that.  There's a chain of wax salons called "Waxing the City" that I like; they also use the hard wax and you can book your appointments online.

If you want to wax, definitely book regular appointments.  I've seen a big difference going from 8 week appointments to 4 week appointments, and I suspect will help with the ingrowns I experience.

I think it really depends on the person. I would expect it to get easier if you do it more often though. I'm odd in that I don't really find bikini/brazilians to be particularly painful. I think it's because I've had some particularly painful things done to my body so in comparison, a bikini wax isn't really that painful. I had my eyebrows tattooed which hurt like a bitch- although when I get them touched up now I'm used to it so it doesn't hurt as much as it used to. But when I first got them tattooed, the lady told me that it didn't hurt at all - her pain tolerance was amazing - she said that childbirth didn't hurt at all and was a piece of cake for her.

Yeaah, I always prepared for mine with a shot or 2 to make it less painful. It made the experience much better. The place I go to in Seattle will offer you a glass of wine before waxing, which is lovely :)

YES!! They get easier! I swear by my 'hollywood's, and have gotten every close friend of mine hooked! I have fairly thick hair, and creams and shaving just don't hold a candle to waxing. I don't even take painkillers before anymore (I've been doing them monthly since I was 17), but every time I move somewhere new, I do shop around because not all waxers are made equal! Good luck!

This is a very interesting thread... I've never had a wax done in my entire life! LOL As an Asian chic with my mom's special genes... I actually never really got hair growth kicking in. I used to be embarassed about it during school days,..but now it's kinda comfortable :)

    but waxing DOES sound painful!
