I previously got quotes from two hotels that were going to charge something like 19% service + 6% state tax (and the service charge would also be taxed by the state) so the actual price came out to about 35% more than the per person quote, which is enough to turn $150pp into $200. But the hotels did not charge an additional venue fee and that included chairs, tables, linens, and a cake.
We’ve now decided to go with a venue that needs outside caterers and I’m about to start collecting quotes. I have a little information from some of them from an open house we went to. The prices are pretty low per person. So I’m wondering if that’s because they haven’t jacked up the rate yet, or they have a ton of hidden extras, or maybe they just are that cheap and they keep costs down by serving prison grade meat?
I mostly want this information so I can make an educated guess as to which places to contact. I don’t have a ton of spare time right now so I would like to target only the caterers we’ll likely be able to afford.
This is in the DC/Maryland area, if that makes a difference. I assume that means “yes they are hiding things and will keep adding fees until you have a rage stroke.”
