MrsPiggles:  inner envelopes are old fashioned and formal.  (side note: i used them, but only because of the style I wanted for my invites).  On the outer envelope, you’d address to Mr. & Mrs. John Doe & Family and then on the inner you’d write John, Jane, Jack & Jill.  Or to a single person, Mr. John Doe on outer, John & Guest on inner.

That said, by no means do you have to actually use them.  Decide what works best with your particular invites and the formality of your wedding.  Formal inner envelopes may not suit your event.  There are ways to address the outer envelope to still get across that you’re inviting the children or allowing someone to bring a date.

MrsPiggles:  Glad I could help!  Have fun with the invites – such a relief when they’re finally out the door.  🙂

I’ve also heard that inner envelopes (or pocketfolds) can help keep the invitations from getting messed up on the mail. I don’t know tho- we used pocketfolds and all of our invites arrived looking perfect.
