Hi Bee's
I am a new mom and soon to be bride on a budget and I am trying to make things for the reception and ceremony myself. I ran across a DIY paper flower pomander and thought I would give it a try. Not sure how to use them for the centerpiece but if they don't look tacky I think I will. Tell me your thoughts.. Please and any ideas on how to use them for a evening rooftop reception.. Including candles and maybe some real flowers as well.
Thanks!! Now if I can just figure out how to incorporate them into the decor at our reception I will be golden!
they are awesome! can you send me the link for the tutorial?
and maybe you can find some sort of tall hook to hang them from? kinda like a mini version of the big hooks you can buy to put hanging plants on outside?
Not tacky, very hip and fun :) I wouldn't mix with real flowers though
I am making these for my tables as some decoration! I think they are adorable! Did you you styrofoam? That's what the tutorial i have said to use, but I was hoping to come up with an even cheaper alternative because styrofoam can be expensive!
So maybe just candles? Or should I just sit them in milkglass bowls? Maybe hang themfrom those branches?

Lee Ann...The ones I have so far are styrofoam but you are right its gettingexpensive. Do you have an alternative?
Totally love them!! They look amazing, nice job!!! Everyone will be impressed!!
@MrsCJS: I was hoping YOU could give me an alternative, haha. I've been racking my brain trying to come up with something.
They look fantastic! I'm doing paper for my bouquets...I'm so nervous about it. This is making me feel better.
I wish I could craft something this awesome! Lots of the things I tried to DIY for my wedding got trashed because it reeked of 3rd grade art class. These are super cute and really well done! I like the ideas of arranging them on bowls/jars. I think that something like that hanging would be RIGHT in people's face at the table and make it hard to talk.
so cute! i made them and trying to figure out how/where to use them too! perhaps for decoration on cake table or guestbook table...atop a vase of some sort.

So I tried the same project after coming across an adorable DIY tutorial.. My results were less than stellar, especially when photographed with flash. Man, mine came out REALLY ugly in pictures, I assure you it didn't look THAT bad in person. ;)
I actually scrapped the idea altogether for the same reason you're asking us if they look tacky/cheap. I felt that mine did. I also didn't like that no matter how hard I tried to place/shape the petals, you can still see the styrofoam peeking out from just about every angle. Just a thought, if you use them as centerpices they'll be carefully inspected by all your guests (I'm sure they'll be ooh-ing and aah-ing and just curious as to what it's made out of!) and I'd imagine many pictures will be taken too.. So if you're confident that your pomanders can do the job as centerpices I'd say go for it, but if you're having the same doubts that I had.. maybe you should look at other options.
I think they are fantastic, not cheap or tacky at all.
To those who have made these, how firmly in place are the pins? I'm thinking of making these for my flowergirls on ribbon handles, but I'm worried about the pins coming loose. Do you think a dab of glue would secure them firmly enough for little fingers not to pull them out?
@roux- they are pretty frim without the glue. I had to in assemble one and it was tough for me to pull the pins out. hth
About how many per table would you use? Maybe one big one on a candle holder and a few small ones scattered among votives?
If you are concerned about the styrofoam showing through as one reader mentioned, I would suggest first painting the foam in a color that closely matches the flowers. That way there won't be so much contrast between the white and the flowers, making it less noticable.
@MrsCJS: They look wonderful! You could also place them in a flower pot or basket on top of a dowel with some ribbon around it.
I think they look fantastic! I was looking to do these myself but couldn't find the hydrangea punch:)
I now want to steal this idea. I'm thinking of attaching ribbon and hanging them from the chairs on the aisles. I also thought of painting the styrofoam balls the colour of the flowers. :)
