    I couldn’t hear mine for most of the reception, so I guess my answer is NO.

    @SnowBunny420:  I haven’t had mine yet, but every wedding I’ve been to has had an MC and I think it helps guide the evening. S/he makes announcements, explains the night, is the ‘face’ of the evening for jokes and direction… it helps when they’re GOOD and can follow directions, lol.  If you have it laid out for them (i.e. at 6pm, say blessing, announce first table to buffet, 7pm, introduce speakers, tell a story, etc.). it’s easy (as long as they can speak publicly!). 🙂

    A few variations I’ve seen:

    – the best man does it

    – the couple does it

    I think you need some type of agenda – introduce the flow of the evening and some people.

    I’ve MC’d a few weddings and in addition to scheduling, have always looked at the role of the MC to give context: How will the night flow, and who are the key people.  It’s something I suggested to my DH when he MC’d a wedding – introduce the bridal party and explain how they know the bride/groom.  He’s from New Zealand and I guess they don’t always do that there…afterwards people came up to him and said they thought it was great that he did that.

    So your wedding will be fine without one, but I do think they add a nice touch.

    Our DJ was our MC, and it was really helpful as far as keeping with the flow of events.  He did the annoucements and wedding party introductions, and helped keep us on track with speeches and cake cutting etc…
