I was channel surfing the other day and ended up at 19 Kids and Counting because I saw their adorable kitten. However, the wife kept calling the kitten “it”. The kitten had a pretty unisex name, Domino, so I actually don’t know if it was a he or a she.
I call my cat he since he IS a boy. But I have encountered people before who just call their pets “its”.
Curious, how many people do that? How come?

I call Monty “he” because he’s a boy, and Luna “she” because she’s a girl! Although I have told Luna she’s a good boy a few times already, she’s a new addition and I’m so used to only having a boy!

That’s really strange, we call our dog “she” because she is a girl.
Maybe somehow, they don’t know if the cat is male or female…?

I call my cat a boy because he is one lol.
That 19 Kids and Counting family gets stranger and stranger the more I hear about them…

If someone called my cat an “it” I would evil eye them. He is a he. 🙂

My beautiful baby girl is A GIRL and SHE will be referred to as “she” 🙂 That’s odd to call a pet “it”…uness it’s a pet rock of course!

Hmm that is strange. I call my boy cat by his name or “he” and my girl cat by her name or “she.” Maybe the mom has too many kids/names to keep track of she didn’t want to bother learning the name of the kitten?

I am constantly calling my cats my little girls. Like when I put food down I say, “dinner girls!” or I say “good morning little girls”. I always say ‘she’ when I talk about them to other people as does my son and dH.

I’ve been calling my cat and my new husband’s cat a lot of things other than he, she or it lately……it’s getting better, but we still have some hissing, spitting and screaching matches from time to time.
My husband did experience Savnannah’s first hairball/puke today….he stepped in it…told him she has long hair and to get used to it!!! His little girl, Bad Cat is shorthaired and doesn’t have those issues…
they are our “girls”!!!!!

I worked at a kennel and I always called them “it” because I thought it was funny. And sometimes it was hard to know, with so many dogs running around (cageless) who was what gender. But usually I call doggie a she.

Yah! They are what they are. I love my little momma’s boy.
I have heard the excuse before where they call a male pet an it if he has been neutered. But… do you call a guy who had a vasectomy an it?

It seems that people who don’t care for pets usually call them it. To me, it’s a red flag on how they treat them.

Maybe with that many he/she’s in the house, it’s easier to identify the cat as an object – thus, the ‘it’.
Personally, I use ‘she’ with my dog 🙂

@cbee: Oh I do this too as a joke. My family cat is 16 and we tease her just as much as anyone else in the family. When we go to my parents house I usually ask “where is that gray cat? Has it accomplished anything today besides sleeping?”
