I make a point to donate to at least one charity. I know I had amazing Christmases as a kid (or at least I remember them that way) and I want to help other kids feel that way too!
We donate a few toys every year to Toys for Tots. We go to Target and pick out two girl's toys and two boy's toys. It's something I look forward to every year.
I do this every year. I love it when stores have collection bins for toys for tots because every time I go shopping I am reminded to get one to put in. Both my parents grew up pretty poor so it kind of hits home for me.
I was well under the poverty level as a small child and I know that a few years we would not have had Christmas at all if it wasn't for the generosity of others. As an adult I also think back to the few Thanksgiving dinners that we had got as a donation or the Christmas eve that "Santa" came in a pick up truck load with items for our family. I might not always be able to give a large amount but every year I try my best to get a few things for others that really need the help.
I think every kid deserves a gift on Christmas, regardless of their parent’s financial circumstances.
I’m really proud (sorry to hoot my own horn here!) of several years ago starting a Christmas giving program for my department at work (6 people). Each year we adopt a family or two for Christmas. The families are from a local family shelter and typically are single mothers with multiple young children, who have experienced domestic violence and are just trying to get on their feet, after living for a time in the shelter. We buy the kids full sets of clothing (both winter/summer clothing, shoes, socks, etc.), toys they requested, and also purchase clothing for the mothers and household items like a microwave, vacuum cleaner, etc. We also give them a gift card to a grocery store or Target.
It’s SO much fun to get all the items we’ve purchased together and wrap them all up and put bows and things on them.
I’m not religious at all, but know I’ve been really blessed with the childhood I had (even though we were not rich, at all), and with the job and life I have now, so I like to try to give back as much as I can. Its just the right thing to do, I don’t how else to say it.
@Nola: My mom and gran still talk about how thankful they were for the people who helped them when my mom was young. I always keep them in mind when I see a food drive at work.
Every year my office does Toys for Tots and a winter coat drive. I always give a toy and a coat if I have one to donate.
My family decided 2 years ago that we are all too old for gifts. So, instead we adopt a family, do the shopping together, then have a wrapping party/dinner to celebrate. Even my scroogey stepfather gets into it. He likes picking out things for boys. We were able to buy a new bike for a kid that would not otherwise have it one year. It feels really good...way better than another pair of slippers or a bathrobe I don't really need would feel.
I always fill a couple shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, plus donate to food banks.
@gabrielleelise1981 : That is really cool! The town that I use to live in had a program for back to school that would get clothes and school supplies for kids and I loved to go shopping for the kids. I just loved buying all of the school clothes for the kids.
Some years I do also try to adpot a family. Either way I will either adopt a family or get gifts for kids.
I always make a donation at Christmas time - typically to both the local food bank and a program called Santa's Anonymous that delivers presents to children who wouldn't otherwise get them. Sometimes I will do Operation Christmas Child or donate to the Christmas Bureau as well. I have also participated in warm clothing drives for shelters and inner city schools (providing mitts, scarves and hats for the winter months). Plus, whenever I purge my old clothes, I donate them directly to youth or women's shelters so that the people who need them and will use them will be able to get them right away (some thrift stores take a while to get the stuff out and then make a profit on it as well, which I don't necessarily agree with).
I think it is important to give back if you have the means to...I was very lucky growing up, but not everyone is able to have the things I did. It is sad to me that the most donations happen during the holidays (which is great!) but there are lots of other times of the year when people need help too.

I was just starting to think about Christmas and getting gift to donate to Toy's for Tots or another program. How many other people make a point every year to donate during this time of the year? Why do you do it?
