Inspired by threads talking about the price of wedding cake.
A while ago, after I told my dad about my wedding cake and the cost of it, he advised me that most guests don't eat wedding cake. I've read from the forum that most people don't eat cake at the wedding. I'm curious if this is true.
1. Do you eat wedding cake?
2. If you don't eat wedding cake, please explain why.
I don't understand why people don't eat wedding cake. Usually people order dessert when they eat at the restaurant; so a slice of wedding cake is a dessert. If you eat dessert, why not wedding cake?
From what I remember, I don't eat cake at the wedding because most of the cakes were not to my liking. If the cake was good, I would eat it.
If people are too full to eat the cake, I'll serve less food so that they'll eat the cake. Muahahaha. J/K
I usually do. The only time I didn't was because the wedding ceremony was scheduled to start at 5:00 (started maybe 5:20-5:30) and we were there until about 10:30 to 11:00 and it didn't appear the cake cutting was happening anytime soon. We had driven two hours to go to this wedding so we had to get home. That's the only reason I haven't eaten any cake though but I also haven't been to a lot of weddings.
I usually skip the cake and opt for whatever other desserts are being offered. Most of the time wedding cake is just sort of dry and tasteless. I've only had good wedding cake once, (surprisingly it was carrot cake with cream cheese filling).
It's never good. I always take a bite, think, "blah, not worth the calories" and go back to my cocktail.
Now dessert tables? Don't get me started.....ahhhh heaven
There's been a few times that I haven't b/c I am too busy drinking and dancing. But otherwise, I love sweets :)
I'm usually slightly tipsy by the time the cake is cut so yes I always eat the cake.
i usually at least take a bite, and if it's yummy i eat it
I have a super sweet tooth, so it's pretty much a guarantee that I will eat the cake:)
I'm hoping our guests would eat cake. The bakery we picked has many good reviews. During the cake tasting, the selections were moist and light. We want the cake to be light and not super sweet (more like French pastries) so that guests can still eat after a heavy dinner.
My fiancee doesn't like cake (because most of the time they're too sweet), but he likes the one we picked. I hope the guests like it too. Otherwise, that's a lot of cake going in the trash
.
I usually do, but the past 2 weddings I've been at almost no one did because the entire 4 tiers were just carrot. Seriously, they cut the entire cake, it was a wedding of 200 people at least, and I saw maybe 7 or 8 people eating it.
One of the main reasons when I get married, my cake will have different flavours in the different tiers.
Other than that though, I always eat wedding cake.
I never eat the cake. I'm really not a cake fan, to be honest with you, but I do appreciate the beauty of wedding cakes lol!

Everyone told me noone would eat cake when our menu included a delicious chocolate souffle, but we still got one and all the guests I speak to now claims to have eaten it. Don't know how true that is, LOL. I know I ate both. Even if it doesn't get eaten, a lot of people prefer it just for the symbolism. My culture is more traditional when it comes to weddings and cupcakes, candy bars etc are not common, so everyone automatically expects a wedding cake. I know if we didn't have one all my relatives would've been confused. I also remember guests telling me they have to leave early for various reasons but they'll wait till after the cake is cut. If we didn't have one, I guess they'd be stuck there all night :)
I always will eat a slice of cake if it is good and moist. I'll always try a bite but if it's dry and gross I'll leave the rest at my place.
Every wedding I've been to almost all of the guests ate at least one slice of cake (some ate more as the B&G had ordered a larger cake than necessary and there was extra).
The wedding cake is the BEST part of the wedding reception! I love when I get a piece to eat at the wedding (served as or with dessert) AND a piece to take home!!
@cutexkitty: I never have eaten cake at a wedding...I only even had a tiny little piece at my own.
Why? ummm usualyl cause im full and dont feel like eating it! *laugh*
Since i have been working at weddings though and since i have been married for some reason i am more prone to eating it....i think its because they are cupcakes now!*laugh*
I've eaten cake at every wedding I've been to- it's always good! (Maybe I'm just easy to please
) Usually, I go for seconds!
Oh I ALWAYS eat the cake, it's one of my fav parts of the reception! :)
At the last reception I went to, my BF was ready to go right after dinner cause , unfortunately it was pretty boring and it was really hot and uncomfortable. But I absolutely refused to leave til they cut the cake and that was about an hour after he wanted to leave. I could tell he wanted to drag me out, but I would've went kicking and screaming - I do not leave til I get to grub on some cake! :)
i guess i've lucked out, because i've never been to a wedding with dry or tasteless cake!
Based on all the responses so far, my wedding cake has hope after all.
@meliss: Yum! Chocolate souffle is yummy!. As for our guests, I would say 80%-90% of the guests are out of town so I can't think of any other reasons for them not to stay to eat the cake, unless they want to go back to their hotels, go out to another party, go out clubbing, go out for another dinner...
Our cake is 3 tiers, Princess flavor (fruity) is on top, Truffle is mid, and Red Velvet is at the bottom. I like Red Velvet, plus it matches to color of our theme. My family doesn't know what Red Velvet is, so I had to show my dad and bought a Red Velvet dessert for my sister so she knows.
BTW, this is how I want my cake to look.
I always have a small piece (though if it's terrible, then I dont finish it).
I think that a lot of times the excessive amount of frosting/sugar overload probably turns a few people away.
And I really don't want to start a debate about stereotypes or gender norms, but in my experience most men just arent that into cake or supersweet desserts~
I never eat the cake. I hate overly sweet things and I have never found a buttercream or fondant that wasn't overly sweet. I also don't like chocolate (except the reeealllly good stuff like Maison du Chocolat :P) - so maybe I'm just weird?
I also think that the ones I've tried aren't that great. I think that most wedding cakes are style over substance.
I will eat it if it's good. Sometimes the food is not that great and the cake saves the day!
I didn't read the other replies, just wanted to say i think there should be an option that says "i take a least one bite". i always try the wedding cake, because, well, its the wedding cake! but if i am full, there are better desserts, or i don't like it, i will stop after one bite, but i have to try it!
I usually avoid it like the plague because I don't really like cake, and if I do eat cake, I want it to be good cake, not dry and tasteless stuff. I also don't like fondant or buttercream icing, so that doesn't help matters.
We're having wedding pie and ice cream and slab cake with chocolate ganache for icing.
I try to eat the cake but I'm more concerned with dancing. I'll eat it if I see it or a crappy song comes on.
I've never had good wedding cake. Most of the time it's made days before the event, sits in a fridge and then on the day of, it sits out all day. I usually take a bite, say yuck, throw my napkin over it and go back to dancing or whatever.
If it's made of fondant, I never accept it. I hate pulling it off and it always seems to make the cake dry.
I always try the cake! I'll usually eat it if it is halfway decent, but I don't like fondant, so I pull it off.
I'm REALLY picky about cake. Like it has to be a normal flavor (chocolate, vanilla or marbled, with a couple exceptions). It can't have any type of fruit or jelly or grossness, it has to be buttercream etc. So I put no, I don't eat the cake. In fact, we're not having a cake. Surprise surprise LOL.
We actually managed to have super delicious, moist cupcakes (and a top cake). They were all eaten and some had seconds so I can only assume they were good :) We had chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream and vanilla cupcakes with chocolate ganache that tasted like fudge. A.MA.ZING, :)
I always eat the cake!!! Most of the time its pretty good, plus I just love cake...especially the frosting!!! :)
I usually dont eat cake at weddings. I'm not a fan of frosting/icing/fondant or anything too sweet. I'm not a big fan of cake in general unless its something really good. wedding cakes ususally dont taste that great anyway, they are more a part of the decor than the menu IMO
For me, it sort of depends on the situation. I usually *like* to go get a slice of cake, but I tend to be one of the last to get cake if it's cut slices.
My reason for this is that I have always felt weird about the whole "line up for your cake" thing after the bride/groom cut the cake! I have never wanted to go stand in line for cake, so I just wait. Sometimes, after all that waiting, I just decide against it. I think this is part of the reason why some guests don't get cake.
The few exceptions to my cake-wait policy: Cupcakes and small weddings.
If it's a small wedding, then there isn't really much of a line, so I feel like I can go up earlier. The most recent wedding I went to was like this (there were maybe 50-70 guests?) and I was able to get seconds. And it was tasty pumpkin cake :)
And with cupcakes, the line goes faster b/c people just grab and go. The one downside to cupcakes though (for those thinking about it) is that you sort of have to guard them until the cake cutting. I went to a wedding once were guests were grabbing the cupcakes with their hors d'oeuvres!
I always take a slice of cake, take a bite or two and decide if it's good. I just feel obligated to at least try it.
I can't remember the last time I ate dessert in a restaurant either, so it's not unusual to not have something.
But, especially if there are better options than wedding cake, I can be tempted away from it.
