@O.My.Heart:  You should check out how Tyson treats their chickens too 🙁

It was either females or males (I forget) baby chicks are killed on the spot by snapping their necks because they’re “useless”

Yikes that is freaking horrible.

My fiance works at a chicken egg farm. They have SUPER strict guidelines and can actually be suspended, or fired for mistreating their animals.

They are however, PETA approved and have checks often. They aren’t allowed to have more than 5 chickens in each cage, and if a chicken dies, they must be disposed of properly [not just thrown into a garbage bag]. Chickens are also not “replaced”. If there’s only 1 chicken in a case because the rest died on old age, it stays that way until all of the chickens have died of all age. They will not continue to “replace” them until the house is empty. The areas are also cleaned daily.

The worst part about fi’s work is that because they are an egg farm, they do use hormones to sex the chicks, and occasionally, a male is still born. They must catch the male and euthanize it so it doesn’t fertalize any of the hens.

@ValerieBee03:  male chicks are put on a conveyer belt and dropped into a “grinder”. Saw a video on it once. Really sad, I’d take all those cute chicks

Try reading fast food nation… It’s horrifying. ConAgra is one of the biggest offenders, and unfortunately, also one of the biggest producers of packaged foods.

@IzzyBear:  I know how awful is that? You’d think they’d be able to find SOME other purpose for the male ones.

Sadly, I feel that this is the “norm” with meat, eggs and dairy products we consume. This is why my family and I have chosen to find a local farm who treats their animals humanely, and doesn’t give them hormones and inject them with nasty things. These people genuinely love what they do and care for the animals, and you can honestly taste the difference. I refuse to support treating animals so horrifically.

@O.My.Heart:  We’re lucky enough to buy directly from them. We call up the owner weekly and go out to her farm to pick up what she’s put away for us. We found her about 2 years ago, and it’s been great. She even looks for organic fruits and veggies for us at different farmers markets she goes to, if we ask her where to get ____. One of our family friends has her own chickens, so we gets eggs a lot (and for free) from her.

A lot of these online petition sites take your personal information and sell it or use it, so I would be wary of what to provide. No online petition is going to shut down a profitable industry, cruel or not. The best thing to do is not support them. That being said, a lot of these sites and some animal cruelty groups apparently have set up certain videos and pictures to further their cause, increase traffic through their sites etc. They can take images and video that are not in fact from suppliers that work with places like Mcdonalds and claim that it is.
