If you're anything like me, it's been more than a decade since you've seen your teen years but that doesn't stop ME from perusing the "Teen" book section at Barnes and Noble. A lot of the books geared toward teens are actually pretty involved, and honestly just more FUN.
I bought a book today called The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. It's described as "A postapocalyptic romance" and it is AMAZING so far. The title is what drew me in. So creepy!
I will admit though, I always feel slightly awkward standing in the teen section rifling through the books. I get paranoid thoughts that the ACTUAL teenagers are staring at me going "Who is that creepy lady looking through our books?" LOL!
I never thought I'd feel so old. I'm only 29 for cryin out loud!
does nicholas sparks count? i don't know, i think people of all ages read him nowadays
I always loved reading Lourline McDaniel... it's been a while though. At the same time, when I was in the 5th grade I was reading Robin Cook, lol
Although I am not " old" I am 21, and still find myself checking out the teen section at book stores. Do not feel bad or as if you are a creepy lady checking out young peoples' books. LoL you are just young at heart
I do it! but people think I look about 16 -17)(and im 24) anyway, so while I can get away with it Ill still do it! . I like the lightheartedness of some but there are some series that Im pretty riveted with. I find some adult books can turn out really depressing or a just too much for me to handle after a long day at work. So i usually go the young adult section.
I found out the other day that my FH never read Harry Potter. So I went down and bought him the set! :)
I LOVED to read when I was younger and was slightly more mature for my age. I read the "teen" books more as a preteen and switched to adult books fairly early.
I find British authors to write fantastic books that are a step above the "teen" section but not as trashy as Romance novels :p
Try Marian Keys and Sophie Kinsella for some really fast, easy reads :)
PS. Don't feel guilty about going to the teen section to get your books! At my local B&N the teen section as is right at the top of the escalator and more than once a book has caught my eye!
Maybe not necessarily teen books, but I do like reading books from the required reading list for schools, like The Reader and Tuck Everlasting (one of my favorite books ever!). I also reread The Secret Garden last year, and have The Little Princess in my stack of books to read. Those were two of my favorite stories growing up.
I read and LOVED The Secrethood of the Traveling Pants books wayyyyy before there was a movie. Of course, the books are way better, and I made my closest girlfriends read the books too! I still have them and re-read them every now and then. And I love both Twilight and Harry Potter. My FH laughs bc I am currently re-reading the HP series (on book 5) for probably the tenth time. It's a nice easy but entertaining read.
I love teen books too (I'm 24). I'm currently reading the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and I LOVE it...lots of similarities to Harry Potter. Young adult fiction is great :)
YA Lit is the best. That's still the majority of what I read; books for younger people are simply more fun and creative than "adult" books! Case in point: Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, Diary of a Wimpy Kid books (hilarious! Yes, I've read them :P), City of Ember books, Inkheart trilogy, etc. etc. etc..
Of course, I write that stuff, so I'm a bit biased. ;)
@ everyone - I read adult books too, but like ccrane said sometimes adult books are just too depressing and dark. I guess whatever mood I'm in is really the determining factor when choosing a book.
Teen books are great, and gaining popularity among adults. I just finished "Into the Wild Nerd Yonder" by Julie Halpern, which was sweet, funny, and vampire-free. As an adult/young adult librarian, I'm all for a good chat about books. Add me on Goodreads or send me a message if you're looking for recommendations or just want a book buddy :)
I don't tend to read new teen books, but I am guilty of going back and re-reading my old favorites. And they were not exactly classic lit! Sweet Valley High and all those laughable but fun books.
I love reading teen books... A must read
The Gemma Doyle Trilogy
I'll read almost anything..I started a book club this year, and I love it!!
Ha ha! What timing! I was just at the library and grabbed Roald Dahl's Matilda and George's Marvelous Medicine for my husband since he hasn't read any of them. And while I was there I grabbed the first three Little House on the Prairie books for myself. I LOVED them when I was a kid! So there you go, not even teen books! :-)
I'm so stoked for the recommendations. I'll definitely have to check out Percy Jackson. I also really liked Christopher Paolini's Inheritance series (Eragon, Eldest and whatever the 3rd one is called.) You can tell he's young, especially in the first book but it's still really good.
Oh! And The Giver by Lois Lowry is a must read in my opinion.
recently i've read the luxe series (historical fiction) by anna godbersen and the mortal instrument series (fantasy fiction) by cassandra clare..both were really good. i love young adult books :)
I like the Megan McCafferty books....in fact I read two of them before I realized they were actually meant for teenagers!
This doesn't count as teen but it does count as embarrassing: Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. They're fantasy and hilarious. Like. Way too funny.
Here's a quote to convince everyone:
"I meant," said Iplsore bitterly, "what is there in this world that makes living worthwhile?" Death thought about it. "CATS," he said eventually, "CATS ARE NICE."
Yeah I love teen books. I really like the ones by Sarah Dessen for some reason.
For those of you who are interested in Twilight, I'd suggest "The Silver Kiss" and "Blood and Chocolate" by Annette Curtis Klaus.
Oooh another one of my favorites was "Postcards from No Man's Land" by Aidan Chambers. Suprisingly deep. And had some "R" rated parts in it if you know what I mean.
Now I know what I'm doing tomorrow...hitting up the library!
I love teen lit, and reading in general I was just re-reading The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot this last week, it's nice for when I'm in the mood to read something a little more lighthearted and fun. Sometimes adult books are just not as much fun, althought I do find Sophie Kinsella a great more lighthearted read. At the end of a long hard day I don't always really want to curl up with a book that will be depressing so I'll pick up one of my old favs.
I loathe Twilight (don't get me started or I'll never stop) but I love the Harry Potter series, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and the City of Ember series.
My best friend is a middle school english teacher, so she is constantly reading YA lit. She recommends the good ones to me - try the Hunger Games series.
Yep, I do! I just read a book called 13 Reasons Why, and it was SSSSOOOOO good! I love them! :)
i LOVE reading. always have and always will... and i still go back to my old books for a good read every once in a while... even the BABYSITTERS CLUB (which is elem school reading) hahahaha. it's just fun to pick up and read a quickie in ten minutes and feel like a kid again!
I read them. And I'm more than a decade older than you.,lol
A good book is a good book no matter what your age, and honestly I read a lot, like crazy a lot (god bless my kindle which can and does go everywhere with me) but I also read really fast so I blow through books pretty fast. (Like an average of 2-3 books a week)
There are some REALLY good books that fall under the YA title.
Shopping in YA doesnt weird me out at all, my oldest is 13 and he loves the fact he can talk about books like "The Hunger Games" with me. My best friend (and MOH)'s son thinks its cool as hell that I read YA as well.
::headdesk:: my name is PennyDreadful, and I am officially a book nerd.
I don’t read a lot of YA lit, but I loved Harry Potter and His Dark Materials, and the two follow-ups to HDM (although, I don’t really think His Dark Materials should really have been YA – more adult IMO, but that’s besides the point).
My mom has illustrated several children’s books, so she’s a HUGE YA fan, and is constantly telling me about YA I should read. I think YA is good for any age! :)
Yes! They are such a nice brain break. I love The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray, Harry Potter, City of Ember series, and also ever controversial Twilight series.
@LadyGoodman: OMG I LOVE those books!!! The Secret Garden is still one of my favorites!!!
Also, just recently I discovered the Betsy-Tacy series! I LOVE those too!!! I haven't read any of the earlier ones just the ones from when Betsy was in HS and beyond.
@kate169: I LOVE Sarah Dessen! I was hoping someone would mention her books when I opened this thread. Blood and Chocolate is great too :)
I just read a couple of the "Pretty little liars" series. I think those are teen books. I just wanted to read them when I saw the preview for the show on ABC Family.
I did read all Harry Potter and Twilight books too and loved them.
@lulu mae: Oh man, I loved the Betsy-Tacy books as a kid! They were right up there with Nancy Drew, Dear America, and Redwall. :)
My favorite teen book series is The Monster, Crank, and Glass. DYING for the new Ellen Hopkins book to come out. She wrote that series and is the most amazing combination of poetry and story I have ever seen!
Love
Louise Rennison:
Also Fancesa Lia Block:
Hers tend to be a little darker. Very beautiful books though.
@PixelMePretty: The Hanged Man and I Was A Teenage Fairy are a couple of my faves. Also, Primavera and Ecstasia.
Man I have way too many favorites.
I like Amelia Atwater-Rhodes and Joh Marsden. They are coming out with a movie for Tomorrow, When the War Began. YAY!
I am 34 and I still read teen books, mostly fantasy:
-His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman
-Ruby in the Smoke by Phillip Pullman
-The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix
-Blue Sword by Robin McKinley
-Witch Child and Sorceress by Celia Rees
@Minutiae: I read Redwall too... only the first of the series tho. I will def have to get back to that series. Right now though I have the first 3 or 4 books of the Warrior Cats series that I've been wanting to get started on. I LOVE books with animals as the main characters! I will have to read the other Betsy-Tacy books someday soon, the earlier ones from when she was a kid. I sure I will love them as much as the later books! :)
I'm a teacher so I often read teen books to keep current. Plus, I enjoy them ;-)
