My photographers are from NY and my rental company will be from WV. I’m in PA. I love my photographers but sometimes I think, “I should be supporting local artist and local companies” and then I think screw that! Every Pittsburgh photographer I contacted was too slow in response or too arrogant for my tastes. The rental company wanted $1300 more for the same tent a WV rental company had for under $1000.
One of my friends said I should be doing everything locally. Are you doing everything locally with your vendors or are you supporting another states/city economy.

I didn’t have anything from out-of-state for my wedding but my florist was from a different city and travelled for me. I have zero qualms about not “supporting local”. I’m going to support the people who best fit my needs and wants.
ETA: I lied – our DJ was out of state. He’s a personal friend of Darling Husband and I who brought all of his equipment up from GA to DJ for us!

I’m doing everything out of state. Never crossed my mind to feel bad about not supporting my local economy.

If I were writing a response from the town I used to live in, I would say, no. I don’t feel bad at all. The town I’m from is very small, so it definitely could benefit from the business…but…the prices are out of control. There is one professional photographer in town and the quality of his work does not match his price. He is way over priced and no way would I pay a ton of mula for crappy photos just to support the local economy. Being the town is super tiny, you hear a lot of “support the local economy” arguments, but the consumer has to have a way to pay for it…and if they’re jacking up the prices just because there is no competition and they can do that…then it’s there problem that us consumers take our business elsewhere.

Just about everything for the wedding except for my outfit and invitations supported the local economy!

Everybody is local for me, except my coordinator, who is my friends sister. I didn’t actually look at anything far away. Seemed like too much work 🙂 I don’t think that for photographers the local argument makes much sense- ‘buy local’ is kind of a mantra for supporting small businesses vs large corporations. Did you go with a corporation for your photographer. I think flowers would be a better argument for local, small businesses, possibly hair/ makeup too.

Wow! I hadn’t even considered that! As PPs mentioned I will support vendors that best suit my needs whether they are local or not. I’m pretty sure our DJ will be out of the NY area and we are in DC.
