FMIL doesn't make the bed with a top sheet. Which is horrible. Obviously, I cannot sleep well there due to the lack of a top sheet. There have been times, in the middle of the night that I just cannot take it anymore, and I scour the closets and drawers looking for where she may store all the top sheets that she doesn't use! I mean, we all know they COME in the package for goodness sake!
I've never once found a top sheet in her home, and I still have no clue what she uses the extras for.
After a year or two or looking, and not sleeping, and looking some more.... I just bring my own. BYOTS.
Do you find something to be "odd" at your IL's home? How did you adapt?
Their bathroom has no door. Not temporarily, but...FI says for at least the last 10 years. It's not just me, right? It's down a long hall, but, weird!
And I didn't adapt. We stay at a hotel, and I just limit my fluid intake when I'm there :P
Haha! i HATE topsheets and use them for nothing but taking up room in my linen closet or to take on vacation if we rent a house. I used to use them all the time, but I hate having my feet confined,so was always pulling them out anyway. She's normal,in case you don't know. :P Lots of us start to cut corners when we're trying to simplify our lives.
Omg, Smyley! No topsheet for you?! Inexcusable. ;) As a side note: Do people who don't use topsheets just wash their comforters more? Please tell me yes.
Well you can buy just the bottom sheet so that's probably what she does but seriously why no top sheet?? I've never heard that before and man she must have to wash the comforter and blanket a TON!!! I mean part of the awesomeness of the top sheet is it keeps you from having to wash the rest of the bedding every week! That's kind of weird but I guess I shouldn't talk I actually don't like my sheets to match, bottoms and tops need to be different colors (matching but not exact), pillow cases match one of the sheets doesn't matter which.
@VirginaMarie - I don't use a topsheet and I wash my quiltcover every week and my quilt very often! Topsheets remind me of uncomfy hotel beds for some reason!
Ha! I actually use duvet covers that get washed weekly and the comforters get dry cleaned.
I forgot to answer the question. My inlaws never put napkins on the table when serving any meal. Used to drive me insane. I also had a friend invite us for Thanksgiving dinner one year when we were living in Colorado, and she put a roll of paper towels on the table when I asked for napkins. SHE thought I was too fussy! lol
We don't use topsheets, because I hate hate hate them. They always end up bunched up around my feet, and it's no hassle to wash our duvet cover once a week. The only time I like topsheets is in the summer when it's too hot for blankets. Or when I'm building a fort. Because forts are awesome, at any age.
My in-laws house is strange because they leave the radio on for about half an hour in the morning, playing loud crappy pop music from the nineties. It drives me crazy.
They are also a perpetual take-out/restaurant house, so there's never anything to cook or eat, or if there is, it's expired.
Umm...my FMIL lives in a trailer by the side of a freeway with her freaky BF and a shut-in roommate and meth addicted neighbors. So, yes, I find things to be strange at her house. I've stayed there once, and will not do so again.
I technically have my top sheet on my bed but leave it tucked in. (I hate making my bed) So I just use my quilt and wash it when I wash my sheets. I need to wash everything more often :/
As for my FMIL house, the fact that they have technically only two bedrooms and 7 people are currently living there bothers me. Also, she doesn't clean very well (or at all), I know I know I shouldn't be critical b/c my apartment isn't great. She doesn't have a job, and I always see FFIL doing the cleaning/laundry even though he's the "breadwinner". She does cook, I just have to make sure there's no cat hair on my food :(
AH all these non top sheet users! Do you use a top sheet when making the bed for guests at your house?!?
I love how this turned into topsheet post instead of IL's house :) I use a cotton light blanket in place of a top sheet (find it more breathable) but need top sheets when sleeping elsewhere. Hubby and I have separate blankets btw :) We don't share!
My IL's REFUSE to allow anyone to cut their nails in the house. Even in the middle of a blizzard, you have to go outside. Seriously!
@kjpugs: I personally hate it when people cut their nails b/c they don't make sure they cut them over trashcans so I'm cleaning and I find random nails...GROSS! However, to not allow someone to cut nails in their house is bizarrre.
Ha @ BeKiss!!
I'm the same, I'll make the bed with a topsheet for guests!
@Kjpugs--can't trim your nails in the house? Weird, but interesting. FMIL hates if people crack their knuckles around her too. I am always snapping, cracking, and popping!
@beekiss--well that is super nice of you!
My FILs don't have a towel in the bathroom to dry your hands. At first I thought it was a fluke but now I'm just confused.
Also, I absolutely hate topsheets! They are uncomfortable and make making the bed take so much longer than the two minutes to which I am accustomed.
Oh god... Luckily my future MIL does not live in this country but she is a horder... and apparently I have not seen the worst of it. FI and his best friend still tell her that the movers "lost" stuff last time she moved.
I feel bad for her because FI's Father died probably about 7 years ago. And she holds on to things like a box where she keeps her teas, because it reminds her of the old apartment where the family lived. Of course she was not nice to him while he was alive. She is just a very negative woman.
@Virginia- Is the conforter covered with a duvet? or is it just a conforter?
This thread is too funny. My MIL has the guest bedroom bed made up with one of those decorative comforters and shams, like the scratchy ones with gold threads and tassels and whatnot. But there are no other pillows than the ones in the shams and when we go to sleep we have to take the pillows out of the shams. Sometimes they have pillowcases, sometimes not. I find this to be very strange.
@Twista: My FILs don't use/have hand towels either. I'm always like "what do I do?!" Plus my pants are usually coated in cat fur after sitting....gross again :/
This post is hysterical....I can't stop laughing....
We use a top sheet and we have one on the guest bed as well. We didn't always use one. FH always gets into bed (to chill before lights out) with his "lounge wear" and I hate that. I have cooked dinner we have walked the dogs and now you get into bed with those same closthes on YUCK. So now I put a top sheet on. He can get into bed and chill with his lounge wear on, he cannot NOT go under the top sheet until he's ready for lights out.....
Hate hate hate topsheets. Uttery bizare American custom. :)
Not sure why you have to wash the duvet once a week though! What are all you people doing to yours?
@MarzipanMrs: Not using a pillowcase very weird. So their guests sleep on the same pillows? Nasty.
It's just this horrible comforter, no duvet.
NO hand towels?!? How odd. As an OCD hand washer, I would hate that. Sound like you need to BYOHT.
Also, the lack of pillows other than the ones in shams is super weird. We have 4 bed pillows and then 2 shammed ones. I love a bed full of pillows!
"BYOTS"...LOL. I like to stick my feet outside of the sheets, so I just don't tuck in the top sheet. I definitely use the top sheet. You ladies crack me up. Way to go on authoring another hilarious thread, VirginiaMarie.
I have to abstain from the original question, though. Can't risk a public word against my future ILs. ;) They have very nice bedding though--top sheet included.
IEEEEEWWWWW I totally understand having a duvet cover that you wash every week with your sheets but just an iky old conforter!!!! I would BYOTS too!
Mr. TKE and I don't use top sheets. We also don't have napkins and paper plates at our house. However, we do use paper towels. lol
Edit: just as an aside, I wake up most nights, even in the dead of winter in WI, and i'm 1/2 way down the bed with my legs, up to at least my knees, sticking out of the covers...lol that's why I don't TS! lol
The IL are a strange bunch...I love them dearly, but seriously...their house is built into the side of a hill, so only the MB, livingroom, and kitchen have windows (like, no walls, just windows) because they face the outside, the rest of the rooms are windowless!
@beekiss2: I have no idea. She rarely has guests other than family but I just find it funny that she keeps this formal guest room. We live 9 hours away so it's not like we just drop in. I would think she'd just throw two more pillows in plain old pillow cases in the room for us, but we've stayed over a dozen times and it is always the same pillows in shams...I always wonder if she thinks we just sleep on the shams? We'd wake up with scratches on our faces!
Also, their bathroom has windows that overlook the deck and pool area. It is high but when you are sitting people can see the top of your head from outside and if you stand obviously your whole torso is visible to the outside. They entertain by the pool a lot. I just duck. I usually shower late when I'm there to avoid putting on a show. I want to scream 'Get a curtain!!!!'
@Marzipan-- OMG, I hate the bathroom-convienently located off the pool/deck! Bathrooms always seem to be near the backside of the house, and always have a window looking to the pool/deck. I'm always so shy. I always draw the shades. ALWAYS. So odd that they don't have any!!!
I need the top sheet too! Without it, I feel cold. Which is ridiculous, cause its not like it provides that much warmth, but when its just a comforter that always seems to slide off and then you're left shivering. Need the top sheet!
hahahahaha
to ansewr the op question- she has pillow protectors. they are like plastic bags between the pillows and the pillow covers. it is so annoying to take them off but otherwise they make swooshy crinkley plastic noises all night!
Re top sheets-
I used to be a down duvet and duvet cover only girl- but we got wedding sheets from pottery barn and i use the ts because well, it is amazing. i call my bed the cloud now. (down mattress toper, pillows and blanket)
so I guess I am a top sheet convert!
haha, I love that other people don't like top sheets either- I thought I was alone! I sleep on top of the top sheet, always have. I just prefer the feeling of the comforter/blankets. I don't have a guest room at the moment, but when I do, they will always have a top sheet because, well, I thought I was the only one in the world who didn't use one ;)
My fils have their microwave in the garage, instead of the kitchen. They said they never use it and it took up counter space, but they seem to be going out there all the time for it. The garage isn't even connected to the kitchen, it's on the other side of the house. Weird.
But that's probably nothing compared to what my FI experiences when he comes to my parent's house, lol. My family rarely has any real food to cook, they get take out so often. The food they do have is either junk or past the expiration. My mom will insist that things are good for months after the date has passed, but neither me or my FI are willing to risk it (gross!). Also, my sister has this weird habit where every little thing she owns for the bathroom must be sitting out on the counter. All her cosmetics, soaps, hair products, etc. must be out. Even if she had, say, one bottle of mouthwash opened, and a spare one that wasn't opened yet, both must sit out. It is so strange, and it makes it so you can hardly wash your hands because there is so much junk on the counter you're afraid to knock something over!
OMG this thread is too funny...
Strange thing about the FIL house.. has to be the fan! they have this issue where they dont like the ceiling fans on... but yet they have them in all the rooms.. wierd
@ThisismeAXiD: They have those kind of underground houses. They're great if they're well insulated b/c they can cut down on utilities. However, I love my windows...so I'm with you on that.
@MarzipanMrs: That stink's that they have no blinds/curtains. Do they have any other restrooms? Maybe your fiance could suggest frosting that window (you know that weird look to the window, still lets in natural light but obscures the image.)
Now I wonder when I'm older and my (future) children bring home their fiance's, what will they find weird about my house or style of living? lol...
@greenleafmountain.... microwave in the garage.... too strange.
I had no clue that some people didn't use the topsheets. I love topsheets, cause you can just wash the sheets together & not have to wash the comforter all the time.
FILs have little 5 pound dogs that pee in the hallway. That drives me crazy!!
@beekiss2: Unfortunately the ILs are an extremely set-in-their-ways bunch. Any time my husband suggests the smallest change, he is literally met with blank stares. They hate change, even if it is for the better or will make things easier. For the few times a year we do visit - it isn't worth the trouble to try. We are visiting this summer - perhaps I'll bring our own pillows this time, haha. I already bring a stash of my own food and water (they don't have filtered or bottled and I just feel like their tap water is funky.) Don't worry, I sneak it all in :)
Wait - i just thought of another majorly weird thing. The ILs burn a lot of their trash and leaves, which I am pretty sure is totally illegal, but what's worse is that they burn all kinds of things that aren't meant to be burned, like those heavy plastic deli trays and stuff like that. There are literally plumes of toxic black smoke coming up from their back yard. Last time we were there it was so bad my eyes were watering and i was coughing and had to go inside and close the windows in the guest room. No one but me and the hubs thinks it is a problem.
Ok, clearly I could go on and on. I am going to make a bloody mary, lol ;)
@marzipam mrs- please go on! These are too funny! And yeah im pretty sure they shouldnt burn styrafoam lol.
@marzipanmrs: Wow, your inlaws seem like a mix of my dad + my inlaws. My dad burns paper, and on a few occasions plastic and styrofoam. And I'm like "dad, don't do it..." My in laws wouldn't burn plastic, my FFIL is a plastics engineer. Fun fact: When you recycle plastic, it becomes a lower grade and ultimately all recycled plastic eventually becomes water hose.
