So I'm kind of cranky about working today! I have a weird work situation... I just work for one guy and the whole deal is super informal. When I first was offered the job I asked for a list of which holidays I get off and I got a huge list... basically all bank holidays. (Including columbus day). Well it became quite apparent very early that my boss works 24/7. He works weekends. He works nights. This is his business and he works around the clock. He doesn't really acknowledge the not-big holidays. I honestly think he just forgets.... and I feel too badly to be like "hey remember how you told me that I got columbus day off? Yea i'm not working" haha. I know I COULD... but he is like the nicest person ever and he treats me really well. Plus he needs my help. So other than Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, Memorial Day and Labor Day, I just let it go and work. But I am a bit cranky :(
Who else is stuck working today?
Yessssssss, unfortunately, I am also at work today. I work in healthcare staffing, and hospitals always need staff - regardless of the "holiday". :) Hang in there, sister.
Me!! And I think some co-workers shared their germs so I am coming down with a head cold...which equals MAJOR migraine! I'm with ya sista!
My school doesn't have Columbus Day off. I do have a 4 day weekend next weekend for my mid semester break though!
Does cleaning my house count?! I worked over the weekend and the boys ruled my house. It looks like a tornado whipped through THE ENTIRE house. There isn't one room that doesn't need cleaning. Trust me. It's bad!! I guess I'll get started at 9 or so (because I need a nap!!)
I'm at work. I get the days you mentioned plus MLK and July 4, that's it.
I'm glad I'm not alone... :) (although sorry you all have to work too).
I think a lot of my crankyness stems from the fact that I know I COULD probably take the day off if I was willing to just tell him I was going to take it off because it was in my offer. If I just knew coming in I don't get holidays it'd be a little less frustrating haha.
Holler for being a teacher and gettin C-day off! Sorry for all you workin girls out there :( I'm having a wedding crafting day, going to try those organza flowers I've seen everywhere, I'll post a pic if they come out good!
School's annoying. I wish i could be doing wedding crafts today. I have a ton to do soon & I have to wait until next weekend :(
I don't have any lectures today to watch (which means I can catch up on last week's), BUT i'm still at work.
I guess I can't complain, I get 1.5 weeks paid around Christmas, but it means we have to work Columbus and MLK day =(
I'm at work. I work in finance and we don't close for Columbus Day :o( My FI was all cuddled up in bed when I left for work this morning (he is a teacher)
I'm at work today too... the HR director at the non-profit I work for laughed at me last week when I asked him if he had Columbus Day off... grrr, a simple no would have worked! Oh well, at least the metro was completely empty on my way in this morning and instead of being crammed in like a cattle car, I actually got a seat today!
I'm working. Ugh. At this point - this Sugar momma is happy to be employed!
We get Time Off With Pay for every week that we are employed - we earn hours. Our only true holidays are New Year's Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Even on those days we have to use the time we earn to be "off", but the amount we earn per week takes these 6 days into account.
We only get 7 holidays off (actually one is a floating holiday and can be used like PTO - this year I used it for part of my wedding time off), so yes I'm a work today. My kids are in school today too, so those teacher's didn't get off.
My son has school today too.. in the past they got this day off, so I don't understand why everyone all of a sudden insisted this year people go to work/school, weird.
I am in a weird school situation. It is an American owned school with mostly American students but located in a foreign country. The only holiday that we get off is Christmas. We have class on Thanksgiving, MLK, 4th of July, Labor Day and so on. We don't get the national holidays of the country that we are in either. So yeah I didn't even remember it was Columbus day because I still am going to class.
Stuck at work. :(
Everyone with kids took the day off since some schools are out, except for my evil boss, so it's just me and her.
AND I have school tonight. :(
my son is in school today as well, but he got friday off for fair day... go figure!
I'm in Ireland so I'm at work (jealous of my friend and family who have the day off at home!) but we get the last Monday in October off so I'm hanging on til then!
@laylabelle- wow that sucks!!! Sounds like you earned yourself a starbucks today :) (I feel that crappy days deserve starbucks heh)
I have today off and my 7 year old daughter just asked if we could go wedding dress shopping so I guess we're heading out for our first shot at finding a dress!!!
I don't get it off, AND I don't get time and a half. For real bummer.
I work for a bank which is automatically closed. With that said though, I work in a call center for the bank and it does NOT close but the nice thing is, they ASKus if we want to work and if we don't, we take the day off with Holiday pay. I used to have Mondays so I'd have the holiday off and get a bonus floating holiday to use, but they make me work them now. :(
I don't get it off. I'm a state employee but it's not a holiday our state observes. Hrmph.
I do NOT get today off. My work only begrudgingly gives employees the big holidays off, which I find ironic since the management wouldn't be caught dead working on a holiday. And I can guarantee you they aren't working today!
i'm at work-- we used to get columbus day off, but then last year my organization "traded" it with the day after thanksgiving, which is obviously a much better day off to have, but still! it stinks. plus, we're in dc and basically the whole city shuts down, so it stinks even more to have to come in...
I didn't even know it was Columbus day until I just saw Mrs. Penguin's post. I work at a University, and there has been no talk at all of there being a day off (and I was clearly scheduled). My mom works in another department, and they have a lab meeting today. Blah.
Well I LIVE in Columbus Ohio... I kind of feel like everyone here should get the day off so we can all go have a picnic for our namesake or something haha
I'm stuck at work today, too! And it's such a gorgeous autumn day here in Indiana, I can't even enjoy it. Big bummer.
Nobody gets Columbus Day off here in Colorado. I'm at work and am EXHAUSTED because we went to the Rockies/Phillies game last night in the freezing cold and I didn't get home until 1:30 am. That's how much I love my FI!
I'm off today. I am a college student and on Mondays & Wednesdays I intern at a local school...and they have no school today, so nothing for me!!
I work for a mega bank and have today off!
What makes it better is that we are celebrating THANKSGIVING today!! My brother-in-law works on The World, a residential cruise ship, and is going back to work in a week. Thus, he will be gone for all the holidays.
I have today off, but the week is set to probably be a busy one because the little girl (I'm a nanny) is sick so she wont be able to go to school. Oddly enough, my bank is open... I saw the sign on Saturday stating that they will. Weird. (it's a big bank too).
