I voted for acrylic/other type of fake nails. I have been getting acrylic nails since middle school and I love them. I used to be a really bad nail biter (like down to the skin) and this is the only thing that prevents me from biting my nails. I love how they look and I usually have lots of fun picking funky colors and my nails look great. They also lasts two- three weeks and then I'll get a fill in! I don't have a picture now, but will try to add one later. If I take them off for a day or two DH will say "Babe, when are you getting your nails done?" LOL!
I DIY my own nails at home. I used to bite my nails, and I really wanted to stop. So, I got a pro manicure, then invested in some nail growth polish to see faster results
After my nails grew out, I use a french tip manicure kit. I put "nail guides" which are little pieces of tape to mark where the white/pink line should be. I put a paie shade on my tips, then once that's dry, I remove the tape and cover with a clear coat of polish that's also a nail hardener.
Nothing fancy, but they look nice and natural and it's inexpensive. :)

Here is a pic of mine, I love to get the acrylic. My fingers are so chubby and they make me feel like they lengthen my fingers, I love tapping them on my desk and just plain feeling them all the time - weird- but I used to play with my grandmother's nails when I would sit on her lap and it relaxed me. I also love picking out funky colors. I usually don't keep up with them so long, as it get a little pricey, but I've been going since I got married and consider it my little treat.
I also am a nail biter, so this helps out tremendously!!
I get pink & whites, which is a version of the gel acrylic nails. They look similar toa french manicure, but more natural. And they don't chip at all. I only need to go once every 3-4 weeks for a manicure. I love them!
I dont because they dont stay nice. I am too rough on my hands
My mom tries to get me to ge fake nails (although she gets mad when I call them that because I guess its not technically correct because its a gel maybe? that is attached to her nail?) But I dont like the way they look. They look thick and strange to me. Too obvious its not natural nail.
So instead I just keep them clean, cutickes clean and with a little length. No polish.
I did Shellac for my e-pics (don't have them back yet), but they lasted 3 weeks! I am thinking about doing it regularly. I loved it. Right now, I manicure them myself and paint them and always have.
I was getting Shellac regularly for a little while but found I couldn't get it to last anywhere near as long as they said (mine would last 7-8 days AT MOST before peeling right off, no matter what salon I went to or who did them), so I stopped getting them because they were hardly better than regular polish for me.
I am looking in to purchasing an IBD gel nail kit (different than the gel polish, these are like gel "fake nails") to do regularly at home. I love the look of fake nails but can't find a salon around here anywhere that does gel nails, and I can't bring myself to do acrylics even though I love how they look -- I don't want to deal with the damage to my natural nails /:
I also get pink & whites every 3-4 weeks & I love them! :)
I ge manicures, but am a nail biter... I did the shallac thing, to make it last longer, but I too had a hard time stretching it to two weeks... I think because where I work I am constantly applying hand sanitizer... I got acrylics for my wedding and have really liked them- they look natural, and feel great! She was trying to sell me on pink and whites, but I was too nervous, so I did French Acrylic...
When I lived in New York I used to get pink and whites. I did that religiously every two weeks for almost two years. Then I moved to Florida, and found that they only did regular acrylics. And they used drills that damaged my nails, and I just didn't like how they did it. The pink and whites are so much lighter and shinier and look so much more natural.
So now I do my own nails. Just regular manicures. I have a whole box of supplies at home, and I experiment with different nail art and polish colors. I get compliments on my nails all the time, and there are a bunch of girls at work who always look at my nails when they see me to see what I have on my nails.
Sorry I don't have a picture of my nails now, I'm at work and have no way to upload a picture from my phone.
Confession : I have never ever had a manicure!
I had what the salon called a manicure for the wedding, but it looked like a 5 year old did it...so I do not count that ;)
I just don't care enough to spend money on my nails. Just not a priority to me, although I do get a slight twinge of jelousy of other's nice nails. Haha.
I get regular manis. Shellac is fantastic for a special occasion or before a vacation, but do it too often, and it will damage your nails. Because it inhibits oxygen getting to the nail bed, your nails get very dry and brittle, and so it's good to take a break in between so that you don't wreck your nails.
A good thing to do if you don't want to get regular manicures (although they definitely help) is invest in some cuticle oil and use it twice a day. Vitamins also help with nail growth.
I do my own nails. I love playing with nail polish, and I don't have the money to get manicures done professionally. Also, I HATE acrylics and what they do to your natural nails. Newsprint is one of my current favorites:

Nope. My nails aren't horrible but I defintely will not post them LOL. 95% of the time i'm bare and I ocassionally bite because my nails tend to break off. I think thats why don't take care of them as much as I'd like to. The most that I do on regular is pushing back my cuticles. I prefer neutral colors or clear polish. Like a PP said I don't place much of value on getting them done. I can count on one hand the number of times I think i've paid to get them done. I much prefer professional pedicures.
Thank you for the replies and pictures! I cannot get the gel polish to last long either.
What are pink and whites? They look great!
I used to get pink and white done but now I'm a nurse and fake nails definitely do not work with my profession. I have to keep them short and plain. I wash my hands way too much to keep up with polish.
I don't regularly get my nails done, but I liked the look that I got for my e-pics. It was an opaque light pink and still looked kind of natural.

I alternate between doing my own and getting manicures. I can polish my own nails pretty well, but can't trim the dead skin etc by myself, so I get that done as a maintenance thing and fix my own polish in between times.
I get shellac fairly regularly too, but it's quite a bit more expensive than a regular mani. Also, even though wear-wise I can easily get at least 3 weeks out of a shellac, my nails grow quite fast and so I end up with obvious nail regrowth. In the pics below, the purple polish is shellac Rock Royalty after 7 days, and the nude is shellac Cocoa which I just had done about 30 mins ago. I have pics of a couple other colours that I can dig out if anyone is interested :)

This last one (sorry for the randomness of the pic) is one of my own polish jobs, using Rimmel 60 second in Coralicious. I am consistently impressed with these new Rimmel colours. A couple of years ago the quality and polish consistency was absolutely crap, but now they're really good and the brush shape is fab. I use Rimmel Lycra pro on my toes as well, and it lasts really well. I think...gasp...for the price, Rimmel is better than OPI. That's right... I said it ._. hehehhe
I'm still suffering from a bad manicure (I had acrylics on for the wedding) where they used the drill too far and I have the WORST ridges in my nails. It's been almost five months and they are still ruined.
Oh, and as far as wear-and-tear goes... I work in a clinical job, so I have gloves on and off all day and I wash my hands a lot! I have found that if you moisturise your hands through the day you get better wear out of shellac :)
(just so I don't sound like a total advert, I have had one crappy shellac job where my thumb nail-polish lifted and peeled off at about day 4. And it was bright red. Not impressed. Luckily I had a regular polish that matched pretty well, so I just ended up re-doing that nail, but I was pretty pissed)
I just bought the Red Carpet Nail profucts at Ulta a few weeks ago. It is an at home LED gel nail polish system. I have only used it once but it lasted me two weeks and there was no chipping and it was super pretty and shiny the while time! I only just took it off after the two weeks because of the regrowth. I totally recommend it! It cost me about $50 for all the starter products and then $10 per bottle of the gel nail polish that comes in tons of pretty colors. If it continues to work as well as the first time I used it (which I don't see why it wouldn't) it will be well worth the cost!
Oh and here is a link to the website with all that products! :)http://search.ulta.com/nav/marketing/redcarpetmanicurewk3211/0
I've been a tomboy all my life - the few times I do try to paint my fingernails it looks like a 5 year old did it. I can never grow my nails long because I am always working with my hands. If I do paint my nails, it always chips off within a day or two.
For my wedding, I decided I wanted a professional manicure for my big day. There was a huge language barrier between myself and the nail technician, lots of nodding and smiling on my part. I found out later that what I had done was shellac - over my real nails - pink with white tips.
I LOVED the look on my nails. It was just so clean and crisp and it made me feel really put together and pretty. I could not believe it lasted 2+ weeks. Funny thing - I went back and got them done again, and I think this will be a regular thing for me now, I just love how it looks!
I got a regular manicure when I went for a job interview over the summer and I loved it so much, I've gone back a handful of times (maybe once a month). In between, I file and paint at home but it always looks SO MUCH BETTER when I have them done. How are they so good?
I swear by Essie polishes; they're made for natural nails (many polishes are designed for acrylics) and come in the prettiest colors! My at-home manicures last about 5 days and I usually push it to 7, but the last couple days I'm always chipped. I'm also impatient about letting it dry properly.
i'm also a nail biter so i used to do the pink and white or acrylics. i've been getting my nails done regularly for the last several months and am happy to report after 4 weeks with acrylics, took them off and did a shellac in a dark gray for 2 weeks, i'm now rocking a french tip shellac on my REAL NAILS for the first time ever! no more nail biting for me!!!
First pic is my first shellac, and the second pic is what my nails are now.

Bees, I am feeling down about the state of my fingernails. :( They look terrible!!! I was looking at a pricescope ring porn thread and everyone's nails look amazing! Could you please post a picture of your nails and what you have done to them? It doesn't matter what, I want to see everything - acrylic, gels, regular manicures - whatever! And they don't have to be a color polish. Thank you!
