FI & I just started our gym routine last week of going 3-4x a week. So far this week we went Monday & Wednesday and we are wanting to go today as well. Problem is, we are both sick with sinus colds, sore throats, feeling really tired and when we workout this week its hard to get into it. We both just feel dragged down because we are under the weather. My question is, when you are sick, is it better to GO to the gym and push through it or to STAY home and rest??
I wont be able to go to the gym until Sunday because of my work schedule, so if I dont go today it will be 3 days off in a row. Any advice bees? Thanks!

Please don’t go while sick and spread germs to everyone else via the equipment!

@Barbiestylez: No, I don’t. For one thing, I have to rest to get better, and if I don’t, I’m just sick for that much longer. Plus, if you’re at the gym while you’re sick, you could get other people sick, and I hate being around sick people, so I try to be considerate when I’m under the weather.

@Barbiestylez: I would take a rest for 3 days. It’s just three days! Also, I agree with everyone else – spreading your germs is not good and gyms are already dirty places. I would stay home and relax.

“go to the gym” = no because spreading germs and whatnot
“work out” = yes, depending where I am in the sickness. If I’m at the beginning (where I might still win) or the end, I absolutely push through. Makes me feel better. But if I’m in the middle part where I just feel miserable, then I don’t. My body needs all its strength dedicated to fighting the virus at that point.

I would push through it and go if I don’t work out I feel worse.

@iarebridezilla: that’s a good point. Depending on how you feel you can take a walk, or do an at home dvd. Just don’t overwork yourself.

Rest up, it’ll be there when you get better!

@Barbiestylez: I think it usually depends on how sick I am, but mostly I’m a big baby when it comes to working out…and when it comes to being sick. And combining those two together? Yeah, it’s going to take a lot to get me to powerthrough it. All this being said, my husband believes that you only feel more sick when you stay home. He’s a believer of powering through! So we cancel each other out. Hope you both feel better soon!

Please stay home and don’t spread germs! You could always just do some at home workouts in the mean time…jumping jacks, pushups, lunges, etc.

If I’m not contagious and it’s a head issue (sinuses or something), yes, I do still go. If I’m contagious or feverish, or it’s a chest issue, I skip.

If I was sick, I wouldn’t go to the gym. That said, if I felt well enough, I might work out at home. Exceptions to that would be any illness that made me feel dizzy or short of breath, among maybe a few others.

I don’t go for a lot of the reasons listed above, and also, because I know when I’m sick my body needs rest. I actually lose about 3 pounds (that bonuses right back) every time I get sick because my body just spends all that energy trying to get better.

I just worried missing 3 days makes it hard to get motivated to go back. Anyhow, I will probably just do some lunges/pushups/abs at the house then and go back Sunday when I feel better hopefully.
