I'm trying to decide whether or not to head home from work this afternoon because of a nasty migraine that is making me dizzy and nautious.  I get at least two a month, but usually they don't start until later in the afternoon so I can get away with finishing my day at work.  I always feel guilty taking sick time, even when I'm really sick.

I think I'm just trying to make a decision, or justify myself leaving early.  Anyway, chime in with your thoughts!

Are you the type of person to leave if you start feeling sick during the day at work, or do you just stick it out to get work done? Do you ever feel guilty leaving work, even if you're really sick?

I usually stick it out, but if I'm really miserable, I leave.  Hope you feel better!

This is terrible, but I usually stick it out if I feel sick at work because I tend to use my "sick" days for playing hooky :)

If you're feeling terrible though you should go. Migraines are awful and I can't imagine staring at a computer screen and dealing with that! I'm sorry you get them so frequently. I'll get one once in a blue moon and I can't even deal with that.

Go home and shut your eyes.

As for me, I'm the type that would just stick it out!  I've been @ my job for 6 yrs and only called in once!!  I feel guilty so I guess thats why.

I hope you feel better!  And since its the afternoon...youre almost done!  Just don't work too hard!

I will usually stick it out until it affects my work. If I am miserable I am no good at work as I have to use a lot of brainpower for solving problems here.

Since you feel dizzy and nautious, I would just go home. You are allowed to be sick every once in a while.

It depends how bad it is - if I feel better after taking dayquil or something then I'll stay. I get very sick very fast, so if I don't catch it early on I"m always in bad shape. I also have unlimited sick days so it's not sooo bad if I go home early.

I think if you're possibly contagious - you should go home! Nobody wants to catch your cold, or worse.

For a migrane, though, you might need to see if you're ruining your whole day by not taking off. As in, can you take time to recover this afternoon and then have an okay night and better day tomorrow? I feel guilty taking unplanned time, too, but it shouldn't be held against you. You deserve to take time for your health. Life happens, and if you can't work you should go home. Are you getting anything done anyway?

    Feel better!

If it's a migrane...like lights hurt, noise make my head fell like it's going to explode, I can't walk because I get dizzy, leave my alone* migrane---GO HOME! Because if you stay, it's just going to get worse!!! and than, you might not be able to drive home if you are anything like me.

Um, though I usually stick it out. If it's a headache (there is a difference) I can usually not think about it because I get headaches every other day..but only migrane once in awhile..

I also am bad and won't call out for anything so I'm the girl at work with a 102 temp and kleenex and hand santizor with a note pinned to the front of the desk about not coming too close...lol...unless someone sends me home! I will call out if I'm throwing up--because I never, ever do that and that means something is seriously wrong.

In the 8th grade, I got mono--and I really reallly really tried to go back to school and they kept sending me home..but the problem with that is after I sent all those days at home I was depressed) :( But still got straight A's. booyah :D hehe..so I think that's why I hate calling out..

I used to stay at work to try to get thru the day with a migraine and it just isnt possible!! I say head home, you probably arent doing your best work now anyways!  Im sure the boss would rather you come in refreshed and feeling good tomorrow than have a low productivity day today due to a migraine (i get them too, i know the horror!!)

I'm with mary-alice-me, I always leave or call in sick if it's something contagious.  If it's just a headache or something I know won't get spread around, I usually tough it out unless I'm in really bad shape.

Same as pp, if it's contagious, I call in or if I'm just THAT miserable (sinus infections have rendered me useless at times). Most of the time if I'm already at work, I try to stick it out. But I don't have migraines, but I do know how miserable that is, and I don't know that I could work through that.

Odd, but I have never taken a sick day in my life!  I think the world of "billable hours" (code speak for attorneys who work in lawfirms) deters me from going home even when I feel sick (or staying home when I am sick or just need a mental health day!)

    Go home and feel better!

I am so lucky that my work has just plain ol' "leave." We use it for sick leave, vacation leave, whatever. I rarely get sick but I go on a lot of trips, and take the occasional mental health day. I love that they don't care what I use my leave for. It makes me feel more like a trusted adult instead of a kid who has to have a reason for not being at school. As long as you are not abusing the privilege, what should it matter?

I try to stick it out and get as much done as possible. But I have no problem telling the boss how i feel and that I need to go home. In fact, I left work early yesterday because of a migraine.

    I hope you feel better!

i hate hate hate hate hate hate people that are sick and stick it out at the office - GO HOME!!!  we are given 10 sick days per year plus 20 leave days so go home, stop spreading your germs and go home!

im the sick patrol freak at the office... im always sending people home. we have laptops, mobile vpn access, webcams and phones - there is zero reason for anyone in my office to stick it out if they are unwell especially if they are contagious and putting the rest of us at risk

sorry - huge pet peeve of mine - GO HOME
