Hi Bees,
I'm just wondering how many of you let your cat or other pets sleep in your bed with you?
We have a 6 month old kitten, and he has taken to coming to sleep in our bed for the last week or so. My husband is deployed, so it is just me in our bed, and I am quite happy with the cat there - I wanted him to sleep with us in the first place but he slept downstairs for the first 3 months we had him because we wanted him in one room for safety at night.
Whilst I am fine with him sleeping in the bed with me, I am not so sure it will work out with my husband back in our bed too - not just for sleeping, more for other things in bed if that makes sense! It sounds really silly reading that :) BUt I'm wondering whether I would be better to just not let our kitten get used to sleeping on our bed, and avoid the whole thing altogether if it causes problems. What do you find?
Cats figure it out. They'll either sleep on the foot or the bed or smother you by sleeping on your face. :) My cats are 1.5 years old so they're just starting to calm down enough to sleep with FI and I, they prefer the foot of the bed.
Cats won't put up with you moving around in bed, they'll just leave when you're getting it on. My dog didn't used to get it but now he knows when he's sexiled and he lays down outside the door and sleeps until we let him back in. Maybe your husband will like coming home to a little foot warmer sharing the bed with you guys :)
our cat sleeps with us when he wants, but as someone else said cats leave when there is annoying movement. OR you could just throw him/her off when you are getting ready
I don't think we really had a choice in the matter. Our two giant cats take up most of our queen-sized bed, and we just have to make do.
when we first got our puppies, we had a cage for them..but as they got older we let them sleep in our room with us, and of course the bed is comfier than the floor lol. So that's where they slept until we got them their own beds for Christmas. We put their beds in our room and now when we go to bed, they know that they are not allowed on the bed anymore (they are still puppies but huge lol) and they sleep on their beds the entire night. Unless my fiance is in the field for days at a time they sleep on the bed with me, but when he's home, they're on their own beds.
our dog it not allowed in bed or on the couch either. He's going to be a pretty big boy and just didn't want him jumping up.
My dog isn't allowed on furniture without being invited up. We allow him in bed, but he doesn't come up unless we tell him it's okay.
Cats are a bit different...but they aren't dumb. Your kitty will learn to leave or get out of the way when she has to.
I made the mistake of letting my cute little 10 lb puppy sleep in my bed. I was single and she was cute. Then she got bigger (and by bigger I mean she is now a 70lb shephard cross) and she took up the right side of my queen sized bed and I took up the left. Then I met SO and we moved in.
Yeah.
It took a year to teach her to stay off the bed and she still tries to sneak up when she is feeling needy.
My advice? If you don't want them somewher ein the future, don't let them do it now!
One of our cats sleeps with us (if the other one did too he would totally be allowed) but our dog sleeps in his own "bedroom"... We let the dog sleep with us for like a month while we had people staying with us and it made him and us miserable. He is deaf so when he is alone in his room (which is a smaller space) he doesn't have to "protect" anyone so he can sleep just fine and move around and even play with his toys if he wants to... But in the bed he had to sit still and he'd wake up in the middle of the night and start growling at the light on the carbon monoxide detector and go crazy when FI came home at 3 am. besides the fact that he's 60lbs and has puppy dreams like crazy! lol
I love that our kitty sleeps with me... I find that I can't sleep without him some nights and I have no problems with him when FI gets in bed. :)
Our kitty sleeps with us... which probably isn't the best for our allergies but we just loveeee him so much, and hes such a cuddler. He usually sleeps on my head. I toss and turn quite a bit and he usually just re adjusts himself. So not all cats run when there is movement!
All 3 of my kitties sleep in the bed with us! They arn't "foot of the bed" cats either. They sleep on top of us. Everyone stays away during sexy time though. They figure it out. The dog used to sleep in the bed with us but she growls at the cats and wakes me up, plus she scratched up my footboard so we bought her an awesome bed and a gave her an old bedspread, so she sleeps on the floor now.
My dog sleeps with us. She is small so she doesn't take up much roombrand usually goes under the covers and lays near our feet. Usually I don't even know she is there.
Both of our cats kind of do what they want. They will sleep in our bed for weeks, and then sometimes they will sleep in the guest bedroom or on the couch. My cat is attuned to movement (or he's just a spazz) and runs out if it bothers him. FI's cat is a lot more laid back and you can kick him accidentally in your sleep and he won't get off the bed.
Like PP said, cats are pretty smart, and generally get the picture if you normally let them sleep in the bed, but kick them out. Then again, sometimes we have to repeatedly push mine off to get him to go away.
Overall, I like having the cats in the bed - they keep me company, and I love them to death.
cat sleeps at our feet on nights when we dont move too much....otherwise he gets fed up and moves downstairs to the couch
dog isn't even allowed upstairs
I have always been very resistant to animals in the bed, but since becoming pregnant, our cat won't leave me alone! He curls up right at the end of the bed, or snuggles into my belly. So I let him, because it's cute.
Our four dogs and our cat sleep with us. We have a king sized bed, with a shelf thing behind instead of a headboard. At least two of them sleep up there, and one on my pillow. The rest snuggle with me (DH moves around too much), and there's also dog bed on the floor.
Our beagle sleeps with us every night. Luckily he's not the biggest dog so he sleeps comfortably between and we still have enough room.
Our cat only sleeps on the bed once in a while. She'll do it fairly often during the winter, I think she just likes the warmth. She will not sleep in the bed in the summer. She'll usually sleep right between my legs or by my feet.
I know a lot of people frown upon animals in the bed, but I love it. I love having them close.
Our little dog sleeps with us but the other 2 (bigger dogs) sleep in the laundry room (their room since the kennels are in there) I love having my dog sleep with me! DH gets hot at night time and doesnt cuddle much so I always snuggle up with my dog since he only sleeps on my side anyway :)
Yes, our cat sleeps with us. She's been going under the covers since it got cold lately.
Our two cats usually end up on top of me at night - one between my legs and the other across my feet. I call joke and say in the mornings that I'm "kittymobilized" because I can't move without kicking them off the bed.
Cats basically do what they want, anyways. Trying to train a cat to not be on the bed...I'm not really sure if that will work. It's like trying to train it to not jump on the windowsill. It might not do it when you're around, or when you yell at it, but when you're not there to enforce, good luck!
@NearlyMrsMac: My cat sleeps right on my face! And when FH stays over...he sleeps right on my face...or he will cuddle with my FH...he just loves us and how can we say no? My other cat, before he passed away would sleep next to me and when FH stayed over he would sleep above my head or at the foot of the bed.
ETA: Did I mention my baby is 25 lbs!? hahaha
No pets on the bed ever or on furniture unless invited. Brownie has his own bed and crate in our bedroom. His bed is actally one of my old foam pillows wrapped inside a fluffy blanket. When it gets too hot cause of the heat, he will lay on the hardwood.
Our chihuahua, Pedro actually sleeps under the covers. He's a big snuggler. Our Pomeranian, templeton sleeps under the bed, her choice.
When we first got the dogs the rule was never ever ever ever were they allowed on the furniture or even in the bedroom. Now the back of the couch is called "top-bunk" and the Scottie sleeps inbetween/on my legs. He is lovely to have for the winter as he generates tons of heat. The Cairn only takes naps on the bed as she still can't be trusted over night out of her cage. It helps that they dont shed.
Our cat sleeps with us in our bed, but if we start moving to much or too sudden she runs away. I wouldnt worry about it, if you dont mind your cat sleeps with you it shouldnt be a problem when your DH gets back,
Our big yellow lab sleeps with us. We usually let him up on the bed while we are watching tv in bed and before we fall asleep make him go on his bed. But he always sneaks his way back up on the bed in the middle of the night.
Our cats sleep on the foot of the bed on the "soft blankets" because they like the feel of fleece and faux fur compared to regular bedding. You can see if your LO likes it too then he'll prefer to sleep where ever the blanket is (fleece fabric is really cheap too if you want to DIY). When we accidentally kick off the blankets the cats make due with what space there is and we often end up spooning each of our two cats separately.
Don't worry, it will all work out. When my cat was a baby she would attack my hair every night and I would lock her out of my room, she learned her lesson and now is a WONDERFUL sleeper.
We have 3 dogs that do not get to sleep in the bed. The biggest reason for that is that 2 of our dogs are fairly large breeds and there just isn't room. It's not fair to let the little one on and not them so none of them can sleep there.
In a complete double standard, the cat can sleep in the bed if she wants. As far as when there are activities going on, cats do figure it out. They'll get annoyed with you disturbing them and move on somewhere else. I wouldn't sweat it.
Is it bad that I want to get a king bed so that when we eventually have a dog, him and the cat can sleep with us? Lol. We want to get a great Dane when we have a house and not just an apartment.
Our Chihuahua sleeps under the covers and our Aussie starts the night on the bed and normally gets down and sleeps in his crate or next to the bed. I couldn't imagine not letting them on the bed or couch what's the point of pets if they aren't allowed to snuggle with you!!
We have one puppy girl and two kitty princesses. Our cats are younger at 1.5 and 2, but they are a bit annoying when they're allowed in the bedroom (i.e. fighting with the dog or each other, attacking feet or anything else that...moves, sleeping right up against your throat, eating phone chargers) so they get free run of the house at night instead of staying in with us.
Our puppy however is a different story. She has to be in with us at night but refuses to stay in the bed with us (we think she gets too warm) for longer than ten minutes before she's whining to get down or trying to play with you. We figure its best to keep her on the floor of our bedroom at night because while she's about a 35 pound puppy now, she'lll be more than double that when she's older and we don't want her stepping on our chests in the night at 80+ pounds so she can get off the bed.
Good luck with your kitten!
our cat sleeps with us. He is really sweet. He either sleeps at the end of the bed or right by our head. He literally loves to be the little spoon, we spoon all the time! LOL
Our cat is 2.5 years old.
@misslyn86: my cat is 25 lbs too! YAY! :D
Our pug sleeps in the bed with both of us and it's no problem! She doesn't take up too much room though; if I had a big dog I wouldn't let her. But a cat would be fine I think!
There is something very comorting about having a cat on the bed when he is away, I would struggle to keep him off to be honest not just for him, but for me as well! I think he can just stay given that he will hopefully just jump off when needed!
@nineteen87 The fleece blanket at the end of the bed is a good plan to keep him by our feet, thanks I think I will give that a go. I have a huge blanket on the bed on top of the quilt just now because I am always freezing at night, and our kitten is currently spending most of the night on my chest, trying to get near my neck for some reason, so moving him to my feet would be very welcome! Thanks!
Gizmo our corgi sleeps in the bed for a bit, usually until we fall asleep, and then he hops off. If sexy time comes around, there are a few noises (not sexy time noises) that bother him and we'll make those noises and off he goes. Granted we live in a studio apt. So there is only one room.
My cats don't sleep with me any longer. I found out I was allergic to them a few years back and the Allergist quickly recommended that we keep them out of the bedroom entirely. It was a tough adjustment, but I feel much better in the mornings than I did.
