Cream cheese icing is toooo.....creamy for me, lol. It tastes too much like actual cream cheese, and in my opinon, isn't as versatile as buttercream icing, in terms of going with more flavors. What flavor cake are you getting?
I personally like both, so can't be of much help there! Buttercream tends to be smoother and richer, and easier to make look spectacular. But a good cake baker will be able to work with any medium. Cream cheese frosting tastes very decadent in a different way - in that it's thicker.
I think I'm going to have some tiers of chocolate and some tiers of vanilla cake, and with some type of strawberry or raspberry fruit filling.
PS: I made a white chocolate cream cheese frosting that was delicious for my last cake trial! So you can check out white chocolate variations as well for less of that "hey! I'm cream cheese!" taste. It even went really well with the top tier, which was chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache.
I love both! Cream cheese has a milkier taste on the back of your tongue...buttercream is really sugary. Both are but buttercream is soo sweet!
why did you have to ask *THE* most difficult question for me to answer? :) i love them both. so. much. cream cheese frosting on red velvet cake or carrot cake. buttercream on pretty much everything else. including just a spoon. YUM.
it depends on the flavor of the cake - buttercream for something like chocolate. but cakes like red velvet and carrot cake call for cream cheese frosting...
It depends on the type of cake. Carrot or spice cake - definitely cream cheese icing. On other types of cake I generally prefer buttercream icing.
I know a fair number of people who don't like cream cheese frosting. I love all types, though only remember having cream cheese frosting on red velvet and carrot cake.
Fondant icing! Even though I can only stand a bite of it, I love the chewy texture and also how smooth and sleek it looks on wedding cakes!
You can't go wrong with either, but I adore buttercream. It is very difficult to find true buttercream (found this out the hard way and 7 cakeries later finally found one).
I love both. We are doing buttercream on the outside of the cake and different cream cheese mousse flavors on the inside, so we get both.
I like both but I usually scrape half of the icing off anyways. Its all too sweet for me.
I really like both buttercream and cream cheese frosting, but there are specific cakes I like cream cheese frosting on (carrot, red velvet) and most I like buttercream on. Cream cheese is a lot richer and has a little "tang" to it, and buttercream is sweeter.
I like both but as PPs have said, cream cheese frosting is more typically used with carrot cakes and red velvet cakes whereas buttercream is used with other types of cakes. Both are sweet but in my experience cream cheese frosting is thicker and more concentrated flavor than buttercream.
Now I want cake :)
They're both buttercream. Cream cheese frosting is simply a flavor variaton of buttercream. Any baker will tell you this. The texture is the same but the taste is not obviously. Really, you're comparing apples or oranges. Buttercream is used on any cake. Cream cheese icing is generally used on carrot, pumpkin, strawberry, chocolate, red velvet (a variation of chocolate) cakes. Tastewise, more people prefer cream cheese out of those choices, but compared to fondant, more people prefer plain buttercream. Either works fine.
That said, i like cream cheese better as do most folks I know.

I don't know a whole lot about cakes, but I've known for a long time that I wanted chocolate frosting on my wedding cake. I know that I like buttercream and also cream cheese icing, but I can't really remember the characteristcs of each. Which do you think would taste better? Can anyone explain how one is different than the other?
