We own a TV, but don't have cable and can't pick up any local stations. When people make comments to me about shows, I tell them that we don't have TV and they ask me what I do all night then! Well, we are outside a lot. We love camping, 4-wheeling, outdoors things. We go on walks and play in the yard. If its raining or cold, we will go in the garage and tinker with things or play inside. We will watch movies sometimes in the evenings, but we have a 2 year old so it is hard! And we have the Friends and That 70's Show series on DVD, and will put one in sometimes. But for the most part, our TV is never on!
Do you have or watch TV? If no, what do you do?
We have two tvs, but we rarely use them. We have very basic cable on one like 11 channels and the other has nothing. We sometimes watch movies. For the most part we use our computers for watching anything we want to watch. We also cook and do other things, like play tennis. I think it's good to do something other than sitting on my bum...being outside is better!
We have a ginormous tv, (FH's purchase before we met), but only have the basic channels. We are literally the only people we know without cable. But FH gets irritated by tv and i'm so busy I don't really have time to watch either. we have a few shows we enjoy, (ie, how i met your mother), and love our netflix subscription.
We have a TV and the 4 bazillion channels that go with it... and there is still nothing on. Ha!
we have 2 TVs. one in the living room and one in the bedroom. we only have standard cable in the living room though so the shows i can watch in the bedroom are limited :D
no netflix or anything like that
Meowkers: Haha! My FI and I bought a HUGE flatscreen TV around Thanksgiving time, and we don't even watch TV! Smart buy huh?!
we have one since cable came included with our rent. its a super old beast of a tube tv and the power button is missing, lol. mr. sew wants an upgrade sooooo badly. someday, someday! we record all the shows we like and then watch like one a day during dinner. or just jeopardy. that never gets old. :)
Until a few months ago, I rarely (if ever) watched TV. Right before moving to Manhattan for a year, I sold my TV - I never missed it. When I moved in with my fiance, however, we bought a flat-screen TV and now, we regularly watch 7-8 shows a week.
We have one TV but disconnected the cable a few months ago because we were paying 60$/month to never watch it. Our lives didn't change since, because we were already not watching it.
Like you, we are outside a lot, we run and bike and skate; we enjoy long dinner dates; I am in school part time (and full time work) so studying a bit in the evenings and DH sometimes does some freelance working from home (websites). We read. We spend time on the Internet. And we rent movies when we want to do nothing.
The cable will not be back in our lives for a long, long time!
We have 4 TVs and the super-delux-billion channel satellite package. But we also have a 2500sq ft. house on three levels, and I live with my parents at the moment so it's not really my choice :)
Even though we have so many TV's/channels no one really watches! The TV is always on in one room or another but you will hardly find someone actively watching what is on (except Biggest Loser!). I use the TV in my room as white noise for sleeping; the TV in my study room is used for my exercise DVDs/game systems, etc.
When I lived on my own I always had TV, but that is because cable came in the rent package (1 TV in the dorm, 4 TVs in my first apartment). When I moved into a 2 bedroom condo I didn't want TV because it was an unnecessary bill, but my roomie insisted on it :/
We have a huge TV FI got us for xmas in the living room and my old 26" in the bedroom. The living room tv has full cable with billions of channels & dvr. the bedroom has the same cable package but no dvr. We also have netflix. We have about 5-6 shows we watch each wk plus whatever is in Nat Geo or the History Channel (or any version of L&O - I'm a BIG fan of the reruns!). FI is a huge movie buff (considered film school before going into finance and made a few movies in college), so we watch 1-2 movies each wk.
Growing up, my grampap owned a TV shop, so we had TONS of TVs in the house. When all 6 of us lived there, we had 9 or 10 TVs at any given time. With just 3 of them there now, I think my paretns have 6.
Yeah, I dunno what I'd do without a TV - maybe I wouldn't suck at DIY! LOL We have 2 in our little apt. Living Rm & Bedroom. Well - actually there's more than that cuz we both still have our old TV's stashed in the basement storage from when we were each living on our own.
I swear DVR is the secret to a happy marriage. LOL
Edit: I guess I should also say that both FI & I work for television stations/cable providers. LOL
Well geeze! Based on many of the responses, I feel like the odd-ball, though I don't think I am!
We have a nice 50" TV in the living room, plus smaller TVs in the craft room and computer room. My husband doesn't watch a lot of TV, but he does watch sports. I, on the other hand, watch a TON of TV. During the regular TV season, I watch anywhere from 10 to 20 shows a week! I know, I know, I'm a couch potato. :P
I won a TV at an auction last week, but it is still sitting in the box. We have no plans to get cable or anything, but we'll probably use it to watch DVDs.
Okay we have a tv in almost every room of the house - but that's because FI had 4 before I moved in and I had 2 (for my 1 bedroom apt). It's not that we NEED that many but because it seems weird to get rid of them (one I've had since 2001).
We have one in our living room (where I do crafts and like to have background noise), one in the family room (this is the one we actually watch), one in our bedroom, one in each of our two guest bedrooms and one in the basement that we can watch when we're working out.
50" HD TV in the family room, 26" HD TV in my room, 24" tube TV in my daughter's room. I work for the cable company so I literally have EVERY channel known to man...LOL. On the downside, since I work for the cable company, I have a 46" HD TV in my office so I am TV-ed out by the time I get home.
We have 2 TVs and we watch it often, especially in the evenings when we get home from work. Sometimes I like to just have it on as "background noise"... I won't even watch it, hehe.
We are not really couch potatoes though... we spend plenty of time doing outdoorsy things, catching up with friends & family, going to the gym, etc.
We have a TV and a lot of the higher channels. I'll admit, I do watch tv at night and I don't think I could ever get rid of it.
OH, we heart our big tv. HGTV channel, CSI, Law and Order, etc. Oh and baseball games! We record stuff and watch it in the evening. Now that summer's here, i think we'll watch less. We only kinda watch it if there is something TO watch.
@Adira you are not alone! I am a TV-aholic! There are soooo many shows that I like to watch. And even if I'm cleaning or cooking I have it on for background noise... Biggest Loser, Parenthood, Real Housewives NY, everything HGTV/Food Network...Seinfeld re-runs... I have a life outside of TV...reading, exercising, softball, but I do admit that I watch a lot...
We have a TV in our living room. Really the only time it's on is later at night. We both work during the day, play with our pup when we get home, as well as make dinner, clean-up, etc. By the time we're done, we maybe watch it for a half hour and then we head to bed. I don't really miss it if it's not on!!!
We have one 56" rear-projection flatscreen in our living room. It's obnoxious, but I still love it. :) We dont' have cable, and only pick up about half of the local channels, so we don't really watch much TV. We do get Netflix though, and we watch a lot of history/religion/Nat Geo/Discovery Channel documentaries. And we have two shows we are addicted to - Biggest Loser (OMG GO MICHAEL!!!) and Bones. If we aren't watching TV, my hubby is generally playing video games while I'm off working on a project, or we'll be doing something outside or with friends.
@Lauren - Thanks! I'm a TV-addict and I love it! I also do stuff outside the house, but for me, it's a great way for me to unwind after a long day and relax before bed. My husband tends to play a lot of video games, so I tend to watch TV while he's doing his thing. And I LOVE Real Housewives of NY (though my husband can't STAND to hear it in the background, hahahaha).
Due to our crazy work schedule, we barely have time to sleep never the less watch TV, but we enjoy being able to once in awhile!
ladies we have a huge a$$ TV in our living room that gets a ton of channels, and during the football season we get every football game. We love it! DVR is great b/c we can actually edit what we watch, rather than just watch what's on at the time. We should spend more time away from it, so that's why i'm putting a sunroom/patio together - we can be in a furniture grouping that doesn't face the TV and play games, read, or chat.
Anyone remember this quote from Friends?
"You don't own a TV? What's all your furniture pointed at?" - Joey
We would die without TV. We have one huge flat screen in the living room and a small TV in the bedroom. We have a hardcore cable package with DVR and premium channels and on demand and FI has the MLB package and will I'm sure be getting the NFL package. We rationalize that it's OK to spend so much on cable because we don't spend money going out and we get our money's worth.
@kitty - ditto my friend! We were going to get the MLB package, too but they play so many games that we weren't sure that we WOULD get our money's worth. But football? forget about it - we pay a penny or two to get all the HD and channels, but we save a ton by not going out to bars. Plus, we can rewind things and yell at the tv at our leisure. And i can make healthier (yet still football-licious) food at home instead of deep fried bar food.
ETA that we wouldn't be able to keep up and get our money's worth with MLB. Football is only a 16 day commitment!
we have a tv, but it doesn't get any channels, and we don't pay for a cable service. We use it to watch movies and tv shows (have have netflix and a blu-ray player that connects with netflix instant queue. I'm ohso glad not to have the temptation! We only watch our favorite shows, and then usually through hulu.
Hi, my name is GabrielleElise, and I am a tv-aholic! ;-)
We have a constant rotation of TV shows we watch, some that are on now (like Bones, True Blood, Mad Men, Treme, 30 Rock, etc.) and some that we missed, but get through NetFlix (Tudors, Dexter, Battlestar Galactica). We watch tv with dinner, which is a habit my mother who hate to find out about!!!!! LOL
I can’t imagine not having tv. I love me some L&O marathons for the weekends, and for background “noise” when I’m crafting.
We have a bigish (not as large as some of you ladies!) tv in the living room with DVR and 200 something channels (HBO, etc.), and then the upstairs TV just gets your regular cable 1-70 channels. It costs a pretty penny, but we like to justify it by saying that as vices go – TV isn’t a bad one! ;-)
We watch so much TV. Well, a lot of the time we aren't watching, it's just on in the background while we surf the internet or do other things.
I'm away from home 11 hours a day, I have no energy for anything but sitting on the couch! The act of doing nothing is very special to me :)
We have 4 TV's technically, 1 in the living room, one in the bedroom and 2 in our spare bedroom that are not being used. I honestly dont know what I would do without my Tv!
I have 2 DirecTV HD-DVR's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom so we can record 2 shows on each DVR at one time. On Monday and Tuesday nights I usually have 2 shows at 8pm and 2 shows at 9pm! (and earlier this year I had 3 shows at one time so the extra DVR came in handy!!) We watch tv all time, sometimes just for background noise when cooking or cleaning but I have a ton of tv shows I watch and DH has some shows he will watch with me and then all the sporting events!
I don't own a TV. And neither does my SO. My roommate has one, so I occaisionally watch it since it's included in my HOA fees. But if it wasn't there, I wouldn't notice.
FI is asking for a 32" flat screen HDTV for his birthday, but we can't afford cable, so we'll be using it only to play video games! Lol.
We don't have a TV. We use Hulu and Netflix for shows that we're interested in, and we watch them on our laptops. We had a sweet wall projector setup in our old apt, but my husband doesn't want it in the new one :(
We don't own a television but we do have a projector and 8 foot ceiling mounted projector though for watching movies! We tend to spend most of our spare time doing things together but we do rent some DVDs (movies and TV shows).
We have a few tv's in our house but we don't get to watch cable much unless of course it's the playoffs for the sports. We actually spend more time streaming Netflix from our PS3 or Wii. We would probably downgrade our cable to basic from standard if my FIL didn't live with us. He is at home 24/7 so TV is a must for him.
People who don't watch tv kind of make me feel bad about myself..... lol jk! (kind of)
We have 3 tvs, one in the great room, one in the "man cave" and one in our bedroom. And for the most part, if we're home, the tv is on. I like the background noise. I tivo a bunch of shows and put them on when I'm doing anything. Both the one in the great room and the man cave are used just about every day. The one in our bedroom doesn't get used very often, pretty much just when I'm in there folding clothes or something (I always seem to wait until I have 3-4 baskets to fold then its sort of a time consuming ordeal)
We don't own a TV but will sometimes watch shows on the computer.
We both found the TV too distracting and so it's much easier to treat it as relaxing time if it's not there saying it's so easy to turn me on and waste 5 hours and sit through a gaggilion commercials.
I'm surprised how many people don't watch tv! I guess we are tv addicts! We watch CSI, LOST (no more!), Phillies and Eagles games and silly reality tv shows ( I won't name them for fear of being totally made fun of! lol)
we have two TVs and watch all the time and even sleep with them on (something we grew up doing) he usually watches sports like the Bulls games or something and I usually watch my faves like The Hills, Tiny and Toya (I love a good trainwreck), Man V Food, Diners Drive Ins and Dives, True Life, True Blood, Big Love, Sons of Anarchy
@Jenn23 I love a good reality show! Have any good ones I might've missed?
