Unless it's written by hand, I'm not big on sentimental cards. Sometimes they're ok, if you know that the person really means those things, and didn't just pick up a mooshy card by accident. Normally I like a funny or inappropriate card, with drawings or cute things inside.
I don't have any preference because I appreciate both. Everything has its own time and place.
For friends: funny or blank
For DH: blank with funny or cute picture, or sentimental but with very little text.

@ Ember - I do agree with you and I've been known to give sentimental cards a few times in my life ;)
I never give sentimental cards, and I'd much rather receive a funny one.
@ egb - Blank so you can write your own stuff inside? Or just so they'll open it and be like WTH? Heheh.. that could be funny!
I also like giving and receiving cards that have NO connection to the occasion - you know, cards for old ladies, or for little kids. Sometimes the kids cards are the FUNNIEST - a lot of themes like nose picking, farting, you name it. Really mature, i know. the old lady cards tend to have the same kind of vibe, now that i'm thinking about it.
It depends on the person and the occasion! I love to get cards that make my sister's cry... hehe, and that's usually for "just because" kind of things - like I enjoy giving everyone cards on Valentine's Day. :) And for example, I typed up a "card" sort of thing to ask my sister's to be my bridesmaids... and they both laughed AND cried when reading them!
For FI, it's usually sentimental. Unless if it's a card that is about an inside joke of some sort!
For everyone else, usually funny. :)
I love funny cards, but I definitely like reading how someone feels for me on paper!
i like funny, or pretty. not sentimental pretty, but there are some really beautiful cards out there if you look hard enough.

Totally random, I know, but I'm curious.
I love to get my friends funny cards for their birthdays and I love receiving them as well. Sometimes sentimental ones just seem so... cheesy or something. I would rather write a special memory, or a sentiment of my own inside a funny card, rather than give a generic one. Ya know, cuz life isn't necessarily one big Hallmark moment lol. :)
