Do you have a general doctor, or do you just see your ob?  What if you have an issue not- related to woman things (if you only have an ob)?

I am just trying to find a doctor with our new insurance plan and I have only ever had an OB, but I am wondering if I need a General Practicioner as well?

I also think I want a different GP doctor than the one DH sees... I just think that might be awkward :)

Let me know bees, thanks a million.

A GP is just a doctor... the kind you go to when you have a weird rash your your headaches wont go away. Going to the same OB as your family can actually be helpful because they can use family history and other information to keep you healthy. An OB is just for "feminine" and reproductive things.

I usually see a GP.  I have been to other specialists, including a gynocologist, but that's only when a GP isn't comfortable dealing with something specific.  In the case of the gyn, he sent me to a neurologist because he wasn't comfortable with the issue either.

I was seeing a GP, but I'm seeing an OB/GYN and midwife now due to my pregnancy. The OB deals with me when the midwife doesn't. But you can always get a referal to someone else through your GP if you have a specific issue to address that they don't cover.

Okay, so I might pick out one of each.  I have an OBGYN, and I have not had a General Doctor since I was younger.  I have always gone to specialists or Urgent Care, so I wasn't sure if I NEEDED an General Doctor.

I usually see a specialist for whatever issue I have.  If the issue is feminine in nature, I see the OB/GYN.  I haven't seen a GP since I was in high school probably.

@Meowkers:  Me too, or even younger.  I have more general things I am concerned with however, so... yeah.

THANKS for all the input everyone!

Also, it is SO hard to get into seeing my OB.  I have to schedule months in advance.  I hope I can find someone when I have more immediate concerns... instead of just going to Urgent Care.  Sigh.  We shall see.

I see a family practice doctor that is also an OB. It is great because he sees me for everything. He sees my kids and husband also, him and my husband seriously would spend half of my prenatal check ups talking engineer talk (he use to be one and my husband is now). He knows us all very well and I think the relationship that we have built is so important. If something becomes more complicated then he feels comfortable managing he doesn't hesitate to give us a referal.

In the US can you just go see whatever specialist you want to?  Here that is not the case.  You need a GP (even if you don't have a family doctor, a walk in can do) to refer you.  The waiting lists for the specialists also tend to be long.

@AB Bride:  It depends on your insurance.  I have an awesome plan (that also costs me a fortune!) that allows me to choose all the doctors I want.  Growing up that was not the case, we had an HMO and had to see a family doctor in the network, then get a referal.  Now, I guess I will just chose an OB, a family doctor, and a dermotologist... etc.. for whatever I need.  It depends on your insurance plan.

@MrsMeNow:   Ouu, best of both worlds.  I might look into that...

@PitBulLover:  That is what I am thinking I need to do- find one of both- because exactly that- I need them for different things.
